Baby clothes

I'm 33 weeks pregnant, due just before Christmas. Have most things I need now, just to get the small things like nappy cream, baby toiletries etc.
Hoping I have enough clothes, have quite a lot of 0-3 months size, just wondering how many outfits should I really have/need for first 3 months?

Depends if your gong to put baby in outfits or just babygrows? I've always got my babies dressed into little outfits even if its joggers and a top etc because I just prefer to use babygrows for just bedtime etc but I've seen alot of people recently say they only put their babies in babygrows for the first few months. X

DelurkingAJ · 06/11/2019 12:39

Very few...you may find your baby is out of them at 1 month (DS1 was a hugely long baby)...or not in them until 3 months...and I got given lots by friends as presents. Unless you object to supermarket and High St brands I would enjoy buying as you need.

Jollitwiglet · 06/11/2019 12:44

I don't bother too much with outfits for the first couple of months. But usually I wait to buy any once baby is here to get a better idea of sizing. Wouldn't buy many though as they don't last long

LHMB · 06/11/2019 13:34

Thanks. I have a mixture of babygrows, vests, sleepsuits etc and outfits, some were presents and most I've bought

I had a July baby so needed less layers but my friends who already had DC and were sensible types who didn't have a new outfit per day or apparently only clothe the baby in 5 baby gris until the first birthday.

They advised:

10-15 sleepsuits (long sleeve, with built in feet) in newborn/1m and 0-3m
5-10 short sleeve vests in nb and 0-3m
5-10 long sleeve vests in nb and 0-3m

I'd highly recommend a tuppence and crumble star wrap, it's made of fleece so can be used in carseats.

Personally I didn't bother much with outfits until DS was 3m old.

90% of my stuff was secondhand and bought in bundles on FB, in immaculate condition. DS outgrew his 0-3m stuff in 10 days, and he measured big but still ended up in up to 1m for the first few weeks so I was glad of the stuff in that size.

@LHMB hi just jumping on to say I'm 33 weeks too...due 22 Dec! When are you due? Counting down the days now lol! I've started a packing mine and babies bag today so it's all starting to feel a bit real now! Hope you get sorted...my last DS was 9lb 13oz so I haven't bought any newborn this time lol! x

paperplant · 06/11/2019 16:10

I would stick with what you've got (you're bound to get more anyway from friends & relatives) and if you feel you are needing to wash too often for your liking because you're short on clothes, get some more - by then you'll know if you prefer outfits or babygros, and what size your baby has.

I hardly had any newborn size clothes for DC1 - 0-3 was a bit big but absolutely fine :)

LHMB · 06/11/2019 17:16

Thank you for your replies.
14:59Pinky8383 me too! My due date is also 22nd December, started to pack a bag too. Starting to feel very big and uncomfortable now

@LHMB aw me too! Feel absolutely huge and getting loads of tightenings in the last few days 😳 I'm just intrigued to know if they'll be here in time for Xmas or not lol!🎅🏼

LHMB · 06/11/2019 20:45

19:15Pinky8383 me too, been getting lots of tightening, must be Braxton Hicks, and I'm not sleeping well now, can't seem to get comfy and wake up aching all over. Me too, I'm thinking I'll probably be in hospital at Christmas

For the first couple of months, mostly just dressed baba in sleepsuits and body vests. I had quite a few actual outfits but mostly went to waste. Only really from 3 months did we start dressing her in outfits

BertieBotts · 06/11/2019 21:34

I'd get a few bits in Newborn size as well. 0-3 was too big for my babies at birth. You don't get to use them for long, so don't spend loads, but it's nice to have things that fit them properly.

You can always get more of whatever you like once you've worked out your preferences, so I think less is more really.

LHMB · 06/11/2019 22:24

Thanks ladies :)

My babies were swimming in newborn sized clothes so I wouldn’t think that only having 0–3 months would be enough.
I was recommended 12 changes (so body plus babygro) but you’ll also want two complete changes to keep in the nappy bag for when you are out, so 14 in total.

LHMB · 06/11/2019 22:35

Thanks, I'll have to get some more newborn sized stuff. Wasn't sure if they would be too small, but I guess there's no way to know for sure how big baby will be, so best to have a mixture of newborn and 0-3 months

I would get some newborn bits, just the essentials as we were in them for a while, 0-3 would have swamped her! She is still in 0-3 now tho at 4 months. Even just vests and sleepsuits will tide you over til you can get more if he/she is smallish but not waste too much if they are bigger.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/11/2019 22:47

I'd def get some newborns tuff, it goes up to 7.5lb vs 0-3 which is 10lb (can you tell I'm pregnant too 😂😂) so unless you're growing a BIG one, thry should be a better fit to start with. Keep receipts so you can return them if you don't need them. My twins are due Jan bit but will be here pre Xmas so thinking layers

mumof2masterofnone · 06/11/2019 23:02

I had so many outfits for DD1 before she was born, in reality she was in babygrows/ sleepsuits for the first 6 months most of the time for comfort. I never really liked putting anything restrictive around her tummy.

I have 6 month DD2 now and again she's in sleepsuits most of the time.

Congratulations on baby and good luck! Smile

LHMB · 07/11/2019 12:59

Thank you everyone, really appreciate it. 23:02mumof2masterofnone thank you Smile
22:47SleepingStandingUp been having growth scans and they estimate the baby will probably be around 7IBs.
Aww twins, congratulations Smile

My little one was born at 37+3 and weighed 5lb 9oz and she was in tiny baby size until 8 weeks! Only just starting to fit some of the smaller 0-3 months clothes we have now at 13 weeks. Asda sizes we found come up big so we're still in newborn size of those baby gros and vests.

LHMB · 07/11/2019 13:08

Oh bless her. I bought some Asda stuff, I'll get some newborn size too

Feedmylambs · 07/11/2019 16:53

I’ve got a three month old - so thought I’d pop on and say I bought a pack of vests in 0-1m, sleepsuits and bodysuits in 0-3, and some socks. We didn’t know what we were having and figured we could buy extras once baby arrived, and also their weight estimates are never accurate so you don’t know if you’re goinf to give birth to a small or bigger baby!
Top tip- buy bulk second hand babygros sleepsuits etc off eBay. Babies grow SO fast there’s no point spending on clothes they live in for what feels 5 minutes and when you’re dealing with poo explosions and sick, you don’t care what labels they’re in. Save your money for buying special bits and pieces on top of the second hand staples!

Feedmylambs · 07/11/2019 16:56

Oh and my baby was 7lb 3oz and the up to 1m / first size were big and baggy on him (especially next and Asda) BUT he quickly needed bigger after about three weeks. So definitely get some newborn sizes but just be prepared that you may birth a smaller or bigger baby!! All the best 😊

LHMB · 07/11/2019 17:28
