I think I have been stupid

Today I visited doctor regarding my constant headaches. As I am 7 weeks pregnant he couldn't really give me anything, he checked my tribe and noticed it had +++ ketones.

He then rang the hospital to book me in straight away for IV fluids.

I declined. I began to get all panicked and worried about childcare, not having things ready to stay in overnight and just generally making excuses.

The doctor did say you can get those results from excessive exercise now eating and not drinking.

I then explained that I had cleaned my house that morning (which takes it out of me on a normal day) and I hadn't eaten or drank anything today

He said he is leaving the appointment open until 3pm and I should go.

Have I made a huge selfish mistake?

Honestly yes. You need treatment.

Gettingonabitnow · 05/11/2019 17:45

How do you feel in yourself? Get lots of fluids down you and some food, and some rehydration salts. You prob should have gone but I totally get it with childcare, I would likely have done the same x

DaisyMay25 · 05/11/2019 17:46

Please go, I had ketones++ and was in hospital for an IV drip, was in there for a few hours until my urine didn't show ketones anymore.
I felt horrendous though and was unable to eat or drink due to nausea and was dry heaving, you'll start to feel very unwell if you don't get this seen to

alicewithnohumps · 05/11/2019 17:46

I came home had something to eat straight away and drank about 2 litres and went to Tesco and got some rehydrate salts. I feel fine in myself but now I'm filled with regret

Yes you need to be seen. And starting eating and drinking!

DaisyMay25 · 05/11/2019 17:49

Perhaps just keep your fluids up and go back to your gp tomorrow, if it's still bad then go have the IV

alicewithnohumps · 05/11/2019 17:52

That's my plan and if he advise tomorrow I will go

Yes your being selfish!! You are growing a baby and need to loom after yourself and the baby!! How would you feel if anything happened to your baby. It’s really not worth the risk. Please go and get better for both your sakes!! Wish you all the best

Clangus00 · 05/11/2019 17:55

You absolutely need to go! And start taking a bit better care of yourself too.

Boymummy3 · 05/11/2019 17:57

Personally I would of gone but it's your choice and your pregnancy.
Anything to do with pregnancy etc should always be checked out I think you should probally try and arrange to go to gp first thing in the morning or go to the hospital if they can get you seen to just as a precaution more than anything xx

Jollitwiglet · 05/11/2019 17:57

Why aren't you eating or drinking? Are you having problems with sickness?

alicewithnohumps · 05/11/2019 18:14

I was just busy and didn't prioritise very well. I have struggled with nausea but not really been sick and it more puts me off my food in the evening

Your headaches are very likely from the dehydration! Are you struggling to drink much on a regular basis? It’s nothing to feel bad about if you are finding it hard to eat & drink from nausea.. I’ve been in hospital 3 times with dehydration this pregnancy! I personally wouldn’t have gone against your GPS advice, it’s not hard to quickly pack a bag for one night but I understand if childcare was a problem. I heavily relied on my parents & other half. But your health is important.

Equally, if it’s just a case of forgetting to drinking or you aren’t usually much of a water drinker, you do need to make it more of a priority in pregnancy. Your body is working much harder than usual! I have a litre water bottle than I fill in the morning with breakfast & I make sure that’s all drunk by tea time. I then often have a glass of squash with lunch & a couple glasses of extra water after tea.

I’m sure your ketones will be ok if you rehydrate yourself tonight. But I’d get them checked by your GP again & go in to hospital if needed..

Enoughnow12 · 05/11/2019 18:54

Why did you seek out medical guidance and then go against what he told you to do?

Aunaturalmama · 06/11/2019 16:04

I personally wouldn’t have gone. Ketones are literally almost immediately remedied with Food and liquids. My husband does keto and with literally one bread product is out of ketosis with regular ketone levels. Literally within 30.

beautifulsonharry · 06/11/2019 16:17

This is all very well but I suffered with low ketones during pregnancy and got admitted to hospital and on a drip as my baby wasn’t getting enough nutrience as I was constantly sick with any food/drink and it wasn’t a simple remedy. With pregnancy it’s better to be safe than sorry.

alicewithnohumps · 06/11/2019 17:29

Well I took your advice I called the doctor managed to get another appointment to go to the hospital, had 2 bags of fluid and now I am home and feeling a lot better

I'm glad you sought treatment. Ketones can make you feel horrid- headache, sickness, lethargy. The keto diet that someone mentioned is very different to having a medical reason for ketones. My kids both are frequently admitted with low blood sugar and high ketones when they are unwell. It takes more than a bit of bread to sort it. Usually bags of fluids after glucogel to stabilise them.
You can buy ketostix to dip your urine, but usually fluids will help flush them out. Keep a close eye on future symptoms though. Nausea is one of the main signs, I know it's tough when you already feel sick when pregnant though.

beautifulsonharry · 06/11/2019 18:14

So glad your feeling better. Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well. Good luck hun x
