Once I had sign off by my Dr - my car insurance states that I needed sign-off by a Dr post surgery to still be covered by my insurance.

Less than a week after the operation. Midwife asked me to drive to their hub. Never again, felt very dangerous. My insurance said that as long as I could do an emergency stop then I would be covered.

A month. Could have driven earlier but DP was off work for a month so he was the chauffeur!

4.5 weeks, only short local journeys but that’s more to do with baby not liking the car seat

2 weeks with just me in the car, very short local journey X2, then 2.5 weeks with the car seat. I felt fine to drive very quickly, and emergency stop, but I didn't feel fine to be lifting car seat in (3 door car so awkward) or lifting pram in boot.

4 weeks. The doctors said that I would take 4-6 weeks to recover. I phoned my insurance company to make sure I was covered and they said it was fine to drive as long as I followed doctors orders and was pain free. I was so I drove. However your insurers may be different so please call them.

Yes I think the key thing here is what your insurers want OP . I assumed it was as soon as I felt able to but my colleague urged me to check my insurance policy and it was there I read they (Direct Line) wanted me to be signed off by a Dr (all that requires is them to write on your medical notes that you have been cleared to drive)

Thanks guys...I never checked with my insurance last time...and I cant remember how long until I felt ready to drive...I also always had my baby in the car seat in the front with me with the air bag off...And recently read babies should always be in the back...And I'm now thinking how will I do that?I like to be able to see them and check there breathing ect...Did everyone here have their babies in the back?

Baby in the back with a mirror on the backseat headrest so you can see baby in your rear view mirror.

I drove after 5 weeks. It didn't feel comfortable to push my legs down (emergency stop) before then.

5 weeks for me, as my DH was off and able to drive till then. I avoided going anywhere alone where I'd have to lift the pram in and out for a while though, as its heavy!

6 days on the driveway to check I could do an emergency stop. 11 days out on the roads after getting the ok from my gp (which my insurance required).

I had an incentive to get going as my husband didn't drive and my baby was still in NICU. Local minicab drivers seemed to manage to find every bump on the route so it was a lot more comfortable to drive myself.
