Urine sample for midwife appt

Hi
At my booking in appt they just gave me a pot to do my sample in whilst there but I’m sure they said for my next one I was supposed to bring it with me. Have my 16 week appt next Tuesday and just remembered about this.

Several questions:
Are you ladies supposed to bring one with you?
What do you take it in?
And what happens at the 16 week appt?

Thanks!

I didn't take one with me for my 16 weeks because I didn't have a sample pot! They just gave me one and I did it there. They then gave me one for my next appointment.

I've always taken one with me and the midwife either gives me a pot at the end of my appointment for next time or I ask for one at reception. Blood pressure and urine checked at 16 week appointment, discuss blood results from booking in, some areas listen to baby's heart rate but others don't.

I had to take one to every midwife app. It's to check theres no infection etc present in it because that can be dangerous for you and baby.

Some will listen to heartbeat some dont until later on. Discuss blood results. Did general checks of blood pressure and weight.

That's it

I have a pot and take a sample in for each appointment. We’re asked to reuse our pot (sensible and environmentally friendly) so I wash it with boiling water after each apt and let it air dry.

Nanmumandmidwife · 05/11/2019 09:47

Yes, please take a urine sample. Any clean & dry jar is fine. Just make sure it is well washed to avoid giving an odd result I’ve seen samples in honey jars that seemed to have lots of sugar in!!!
You will have urine & blood pressure checked and should go through the results of your initial blood tests and your scan/combined test if you had them. You can ask any questions you have. We should not be trying to pick up baby’s heartbeat at this appointment because it is often very difficult/impossible and so causes loads of unnecessary stress. You are likely to start feeling baby’s movements soon & your midwife will talk to you about that.
Hope that helps

I ask at reception on arrival for a pot before 16 week appointment and then midwife gives me a pot after every other appointment to fill before I go

TimeIhadaNameChange · 05/11/2019 09:55

I've always done it there, which generally means the midwife is chucking water down my throat during the appointment to make sure I can go. It has never been suggested that I turn up with one ready-made (as it were).

Take a urine sample with you to every midwife appointment. They'll appreciate you having it there ready. Please don't use a random jar! Use clean, sterile urine pot. If they need to send it to the lab to culture for infection the lab will reject the sample. If you transfer it to a sterile pot from an unsterile container it will give you meaningless results. If you can't get to your GP surgery beforehand to ask for a pot then you can buy them from any pharmacy or just wait and make sure you need a wee at your appointment.

Scarlett555 · 05/11/2019 10:16

My midwife gave me one pot at the booking appointment and asked me to wash it out and reuse it for every future appointment... (to save the environment) but actually I'm sure I never got it back, or I might have lost it (whoops).

Anyway, I'm sure there will be another pot for you to do it on the day. The most important thing is to remember your notes.

VapeVamp12 · 05/11/2019 12:02

Mine have a basket of pots on the reception desk when you check in.

I wish they’d mentioned me re-using just one though, they test it in another room and just tell me it’s fine so I’ve never seen the pots again.

AmIThough · 05/11/2019 12:08

I had to take one to every appointment.

The pharmacy do them for like 50p, or save a wee until you get there and ask reception for a pot.

Boymummy3 · 05/11/2019 12:31

Every app you need to do a sample as they check your urine for several things. They will have sample pots for you there
For you to do your sample. I just always get to my app a bit earlier so I can go loo first x

Leag1 · 05/11/2019 13:18

At my appointments the pots are in a basket behind the toilet

sarahc336 · 05/11/2019 14:05

Ask for a pot at reception when you first arrive, that's how I did it last time Smile

OnlineShopping · 05/11/2019 14:11

I’ve had to do one for every single appointment, even when I spent weeks going to the hospital for daily monitoring. If you don’t have anything to take one with you, then make sure you need to go as you’ll probably be sent to the toilet to provide one there and then. Always make sure you have a pot ready to use for your following appointment before you leave (you can reuse the same one if you want).

My midwife gives me one at the end of every appointment for the next time. Just don't forget to get the mid flow urine as the first few seconds can be contaminated by secretions and cause inaccurate results (saves doctors retests)
