Classed as obese at booking in appointment- size 12

I knew I had a wobbly tummy left over from c section from baby number 1 and have been struggling to get rid of it so I wouldn’t have been surprised if they said I was overweight.

But I actually just by 0.1 point get classed in the obese bracket so need a GTT this time

I’m a size 12, how is that now obese?!?

I get you as 28.1

Treesthemovie · 04/11/2019 19:33

BMI is a load of shite. Was created during wartime. I'm not actually convinced basing your size on the sizes of people during periods of rationing is a good thing

Mermaidoutofwater · 04/11/2019 19:34

Obese has never been classified as any particular size though. If you’re not particularly tall, a size twelve might be quite large.
I work in healthcare and routinely calculate BMI. When I first started I was surprised by how many people, who just looked a bit overnight to my mind, fell into the obese category. We are so used to seeing heavier people that we have become desensitised to it.

Northernworkingmama · 04/11/2019 19:34

Hi OP. My BMI at booking apt was 30.5

Woodlandwitch · 04/11/2019 19:35

It’s weird as I’ve never worried about bmi before as I just go by waist and thigh measurements regularly as that seems a better way of knowing if you’re a healthy size or not.
Just surprised to be told obese and high risk category.

Size doesn’t mean anything. You can be very short and a size 12 hence overweight or very tall and a size 13 hence not overweight.

Was it that wheel thing that she used? Someone got mine wrong using that .

Helspopje · 04/11/2019 19:41

This happened to me
Size 10-12, 1m76 tall.
I do weight training.

Offered all sorts of weight management schemes including interventional trials which I declined

Northernworkingmama · 04/11/2019 19:42

Sorry posted too early. At my booking I was 30,5 bmi- I’m 510, size 12, have a flat tummy and defined waist- but am cursed/blessed with large boobs. I swim 4x per week and have low blood pressure and strong heartbeat. I’ve never had a BMI of less than 28. My weight crept about half a stone after 18mths of IVF meds and nothing will shift it. However my nhs midwife says I’m overweight and this Automatically puts me and baby as “high risl”. I was so worried I went back to Ivf clinic who basically said NHS just have to cover themselves from any possible lawsuits and that BMI’s are meaningless- it’s just the easiest benchmark. blood pressure, blood
Tests and the babies growth are much more important. try not to worry x

Bmi is such a load of
Bullshit, people weigh different amounts for different reasons, when I was 23 I was the same size as my same height friend, we'd share clothes and people would tell me I was too thin but I weighed half a stone more than her. It doesn't take into account boobs or bones it's just a broad measurement. I'd fully ignore it.

Woodlandwitch · 04/11/2019 19:44

I am quite muscly from doing mountain climbing and martial arts so that could be it

RedPoppiesAndSpots · 04/11/2019 19:48

I am the same height as you OP. When I was 111/2 stone I was a 14-16.

I am a 12 when about 10 1/2 stone.

hopefulhalf · 04/11/2019 19:51

I am an inch taller than you OP, 11st 11 is loads I weighed less than that at the end of my pregnacies.

Boymummy3 · 04/11/2019 20:23

Listen end of the day... medically you may be classed as overweight. BUT if you feel the way you want to and your the size you want and are happy with it then that's all that matters!
Ideally once baby is born I want to be back down to around 10stone because that's when I was most happiest I couldnt give a crap what size I'm suppose to be to be classed as not obese I'm sure for my height etc it's actually around/Under 9stone and I'd look absolutley ridiculous! X

Baguetteaboutit · 04/11/2019 20:27

If you think your body composition is screwing with the BMI formulation just look in a mirror. Are you built like a Russian gymnast? Yes? Then you're probably fine.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 04/11/2019 20:35

I'm 5'2 and my target is 67kg - I was 75kg at the beginning of the year and that put my BMI at 30 - I was more out of breath when running having switched to cycling for commuting - have lost 4 kg this year. I DID notice that BMI - 30+ does kinda suck - twitchy ankles and dodgy knees. Still at 28.8 but even my target is 27 - I'm effectively a Neanderthal in build.

I lift, run, swim and climb but I do watch my weight and waist - as long as waist/height ratio is < 0.48 then I'm OK but I sure don't want to be obese again!
