Missed Miscarriage - options

Svrjxtsvdjtot · 04/11/2019 11:47

Just returned from 2nd scan confirming growth stopped just after 5weeks (I should be 8+). Have had 3 miscarriages before my 2 healthy pregnancies, but never a 'missed' miscarriage.

Can anyone share what they decided for their 'options' afterwards please?

I am hoping for the natural route, but the waiting is awful. We had the first scan due to a massive bleed, but everything was still in situ. I'm a bit scared of the alternative options and risk factors.

Firstly I’m o sorry for your loss. Please be kind to yourself at the moment, it’s all still very new and I’m sure it was a horrible shock. When I was in your position I preferred the natural route too, however I booked my D&C for 10 days from then so that at least I knew I had an end point in sight. In the end I miscarries naturally in those 10 days, but I felt better about it knowing that it wasn’t another “wait a fortnight then we shall see” situation.

Sending very unmumsnetty hugs

Flowers I had the surgical management. I just wanted it all over with. It was quick, virtually painless, and I only had a few days of very light bleeding afterwards. I had a normal period a few weeks later, and a BFP and successful pregnancy 4 weeks after that.

I have had both. Surgical at 11 weeks and medical at 9 weeks. Honestly, the surgical was much less traumatic. It was over quickly, with minimal pain afterwards.

So sorry Thanks I had a MMC at 8.5 from an IVF cycle after a scan at 5.5 showed all ok, I chose surgical as just wanted to get it done with and get back to work, the surgery was fine. I did however develop the start of Ashermans Syndrome which may or may not have been from the D+C, so I did think then that in that situation again I would at least try to let it happen naturally should I be in that position again. Good luck whatever you decide

I waited but even though after 4 weeks I started bleeding there was retained product and after another month and a bit it still hadn’t resolved itself so I had surgery. The surgery was fine actually, I wouldn’t worry about that side of things if I have to have it again however I think I’d still wait for nature to take its course but probably limit the waiting this time at maybe 1 month instead of it dragging.

So sorry for your loss. My first pregnancy ended in MMC in June this year and decided to go with D&C. I didn't like the uncertainty, the wait. The procedure was painless and I only bled for 3 days after (like a light period). I meant to be 9 weeks but the baby stopped growing at around 7 weeks (that's what the doctors thought, nobody was really certain with a MMC). I also wasn't really ready to start trying again for a while and just got a BFP couple of days ago. Take care of yourself and stay strong!

Thanks so much for your insights. Lots to consider. Just want it all done with now really, but taking wait and see approach for a few days. Hopital were really nice thankfully.

I went on Friday for my check up i was 15 weeks and 6 days. My doctor didn’t find a heartbeat during the ultrasound. He did measure the baby and the baby was measuring right where it should be. He sent me for blood work then straight to hospital for a scan. Before the ultrasound tech started she informed me she was not able to tell me if she sees the heartbeat or doesn’t see it that the results will have to be sent to my doctor and he will have to be the one to inform me. Well since it was Friday i had to wait till today. I have a 230 apt and have been freaking out all weekend long. I am scared of what comes next if it is confirmed no heartbeat. I haven’t had any pains or bleeding so i read up on it and i could be having a MMC. I don’t want to have to deliver the baby. I’m hoping they will give me the option to have the surgical done

Hi OP, so sorry this is happening, it's shite. I had a missed miscarriage earlier this year, there was a sac present but no embyro. I think it was around 6 or 7 weeks it was identified. For various reasons I didn't have the medical management until just shy of 12 weeks but there was no sign that the pregnancy was going to pass naturally. I don't know how much longer it would have gone on for. The treatment was unpleasant, I can't lie, but the painful part of it was over relatively quickly and there were no complications.

Svrjxtsvdjtot · 05/11/2019 17:45

Thanks so much for your honest views, it really helps. Starting to feel a bit crampy, so really hoping it resolves naturally soon. But reading a lot of stories about people ending up with surgical management despite nature taking its course anyway. Just want to be able to move forwards now.

So sorry to read of your loss. I opted for the natural route. Bleeding for a few days and one particularly bad day of cramping, heavy bleeding etc. I stocked up on painkillers, trashy tv/movies and mags, lots of chocolate and just took myself to bed for a mind-numbing couple of days. Didn't need a d&c afterwards. Thanks

Svrjxtsvdjtot · 05/11/2019 18:05

That's reassuring to hear that yours sounds relatively straightforward, thank you. My 2 little ones are keeping me super busy and distracted (I can't complain too much, as I am so lucky to have them compared to others who haven't had any children yet). Really wanted to complete our unit at 3, but not sure hubby or i can face the uncertainty and heartbreak again.

My second miscarriage needed treatment at 9 weeks. First I had the tablets and wouldn't put that on my worst enemy. 4 hours of crippling contractions and pains and was left with retained products (I was unlucky). Had an ERPC for retained products and wish I had done it as first choice.

justchecking1 · 05/11/2019 19:04

Natural MC can take up to 6 weeks to start so you may have a lot of limbo time until then.

I was in the same position as you with dates and I chose medical management. Where I am they allow you to take all the tablets at home so it was much preferable to me than the surgical option. If I'd had to have it in hospital though, I'd have just gone straight for surgery so it's worth finding out their policy re home use.

It wasn't hugely painful, I was given pain killers and anti sickness tablets and could just get on with things in my own way. I'd have the same again if necessary (fingers crossed it won't be)

Aunaturalmama · 06/11/2019 15:59

I had to do a d and c to complete it

Aunaturalmama · 06/11/2019 16:00

I didn’t take any meds. Baby was 8 weeks and it wasn’t so bad. Like a bad period or early labor.

Svrjxtsvdjtot · 29/11/2019 19:27

Just in case anyone comes hunting here for similar reasons, thought i would post outcome. I miscarried naturally in the end a week or so after posting. After a little initial spotting, it ended up just being about 15hours of incredibly heavy bleeding, no cramps, then about a week of light spotting on and off. Actually, other than the heavy bleed, it was much less horrific than my normal periods! Pregnancy tests now negative, so was all complete. Very grateful we can now move forward.
