I'm just finishing off packing my hospital bag, but have been struggling to decide on which massive black knickers I should buy for after the birth.

Is there a specific style I should buy e.g. Full knicker, shorts, high leg etc? Any recommendations of an exact brand/shop and style that you found to work well would be appreciated.

Also, what size did you go for? (I was a 10 in knickers pre-pregnancy & still wearing the same size at 33 weeks). I obviously want to be as comfortable as possible, but still have them hold a pad in place without falling down.

Someone told me that for the first 4 weeks post natal I should expect to wear the same as was comfortable at 6 months pregnant. They were right.

I found shorts style knickers to be the best for holding in 3 massive postnatal maxipads. I'd shifted to those for comfort at 6 months anyway so I had loads.

i bought really cheap, massive knickers, high waisted in case of C section. Don't spend much- you may well want to throw them away after six weeks as they may be badly stained. More important are the pads- Tena or own brand, biggest possible!

Maternity knickers worked for me, but compression pants are the way to go now apparently.

Sainsbury full briefs a size bigger than normal. Primark ones are shite.

Pinkflipflop85 · 04/11/2019 07:57

Asda full briefs. So big and comfy!

Definitely don't spend too much money....I had 2 pairs cut off of me in hospital!

FusionChefGeoff · 04/11/2019 07:58

Have you had the Kotex Nighttime pads advice??? Much better than maternity pads. I tracked them down in a branch of Savers

HalfWomanHalfHobnob · 04/11/2019 08:03

I wore Tena pants for the first week or so and they were brilliant - you can put maternity pads inside but don't have to worry about any leakage, and then throw them away at the end of the day.

mintich · 04/11/2019 08:10

Full briefs high waisted. I got mine from m&s

Shaunieh95 · 04/11/2019 08:24

Don't bother with primark, I got some for my hospital bag and luckily tried a pair on... safe to say can't even get a Leg in them 😂😂

peamad · 04/11/2019 09:06

I liked these. Very soft and no seam to irritate a c section scar.

TheCraicDealer · 04/11/2019 09:18

I came to recommend the exact ones @peamad linked to. After my c section got them in a 12 (also a 10 pre pregnancy) but a 14 would have been slightly better for immediately after. Also consider some adult nappies- I got them for hospital but they came in handy when my waters broke at home. They hold A LOT of liquid, zero leaks. Sainsbury's own brand are half the price of the Tena equivalent.

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/11/2019 09:24

I am 35 weeks and was recommended the same ones as peamad too. Also put some incontinence pads under your bum when you get home - dsis was constantly leaking.

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 04/11/2019 09:32

I got mine from sainsburys OP in 2x sizes bigger. Highwasited unglamorous things but during 25% off they were dirt cheap. Like a PP I also tried the primark ones and was horrified I'd have to go up about 6sizes so that's also a no go from me! They were awful

Weathergirl1 · 04/11/2019 09:54

I'm usually a 10 (or 12) in M&S high legs but bought some size 16 bikinis about 4 weeks ago to accommodate the bump (37 weeks tomorrow). I looked at full briefs yesterday and decided that the usual high legs go up just as far at the front so I've gone for some size 14s but won't be opening the packet until I've tried on my usual ones (and exchange them if necessary). I'm having a C-section on Thursday and a friend told me to get the disposable stretch pants for the first few days.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 04/11/2019 17:00

I usually wear M&S knickers in a 10. For post-birth I have a stash of M&S granny pants (large, full brief style black ones) - I bought a 14 and they’ve been fine for both my previous babies and will be brought back out this time!

Longtimettc · 06/11/2019 23:11

Thank you all so much! This has been extremely helpful! Will pick up some of the m&s ones this weekend as I have a lot of m&s from pre-pregnancy so will help a bit knowI have which size to size up from.

Also, thank you for the reminder about incontinence pads and pants. I spotted some pants in aldi a few weeks ago, so might try them out!
