Low PAPP-A results

I've just received a letter saying my blood shows low levels of PAPP-A. I've googled and there seems to be an association between this and an increased risk of Down's syndrome.

I've still not received the results from my combined test that they did on the day I had my dating scan.

In the letter it says I have to take aspirin everyday through the remainder of my pregnancy and my anatomy scan is going to take place in the metal medicine unit instead of the ultrasound department.

I'm starting the get really worried. Has anyone had this?

PAPP-A is one of the hormones looked at when calculating the chance of Downs, Edwards and Patau syndromes with the combined test. More recently we have also been getting interested in it as a possible indicator of babies whose growth may slow down in late pregnancy and that the woman may be more likely than average to develop pre-eclampsia. The advice you have been given shows that your hospital are “on the case” and are offering extra checks to give you the best care. Aspirin is suggested from 12 weeks for anyone who may have an increased chance of pre-eclampsia, so again, very good that they are suggesting it.
The PAPP-A result is only known as part of the combined test result, so that is available to them. I bet it has been posted in a separate envelope! Good news is that if your had an increased chance of one of those conditions they would have contacted you before sending a letter about this.
I suggest you ring the screening midwife at your hospital on Monday if it hasn’t arrived, but I think you can be pretty confident that it is a low chance result and that your hospital are goin* the extra mile to keep you & baby safe

Yup, had low Papp-A and resulting high risk of Down syndrome. Went for a harmony test, came back very low risk. Apparently it can be a sign of placental insufficiency or risk of developing preeclampsia. Advised to take low dose of aspirin (75 mg) daily. 24 weeks and touch wood, everything seems ok so far! Try not to worry Flowers

When was your scan/combined test? You usually get informed of a high risk result within 2-3 days, but they are in no hurry to inform you if it’s low risk.

So I would say that if they have managed to get the PAPP-A result and draft and send a letter about it, then they have had plenty of time to inform you about a high risk result and, as PP has suggested, your low risk result has probably been posted out separately.

I came back as high risk for downs syndrome (harmony test came back as very low risk after) and low PAPP-A was one of the reasons. I've been taking the aspirin and had extra scans and check ups with a consultant at the hospital just to be on the safe side. I'm 39 weeks now and touch wood have had no complications so far! I've seen it as an opportunity to see the baby more Smile
