Experiences of Polyhydramnios and a LFD ( large for dates ) baby?

As the title says, I’m looking to hear anyone’s experience with Polyhydramnios and a LFD ( large for dates ) baby.

I was diagnosed with Polyhydramnios on Monday after a midwife referral for a large fundal height ( 31cm at 25 weeks, 34cm at 28 weeks ).
Baby is also measuring over the 95th centile for everything and was weighing in at 4lb 5oz on Monday when I was 29+5. This is all new to me as DD was 8lbs but two weeks late which put her on the 43rd centile. I have been tested for gestation diabetes and it’s come back clear.

They’ve booked me in for bi weekly consultant appointments and scans to check both fluid levels but his growth too and the consultant I saw on Monday said there would need to be a discussion on ‘when to get baby out’. I’ve also had a TORCH screening done to rule out any infection being the cause.

I’m just hoping that someone might see this and be able to offer there own experience to help me get a bit of perspective - I was okay on Monday but I’m starting to worry a bit.

I had this but not recently - DS is now 21. Because of the addiional fluid he didn't engage and was a transverse lie. I was admitted to hospital at 37 weeks and had a cs at 39 weeks. DS was 10lbs and was fine. He spent a few days in SCBU being monitored where he dwarfed all the other babies. He dropped quite a lot of weigh after birth and went down to 8 1/2 lbs.

He was on the 95thcentile for weight and height at birth but evened out and wasn't particularly tall or big for his age by about 18 months.

He is now 6'2" and perfect.

Hope that gives you some reassurance.

Honestly this does my nut in. They CANNOT reliably know how big the baby is. They can suspect but not know. The only thing they are assured of is if the baby is too small. I was told this by a consultant when I said I worried my baby would be massive. Guess what. They reckoned she’d Be 7.5lbs when born. She was 10.05lbs. Yes 10lbs. She was HUGE.

My other friend who was induced early because they thought her son was massive had an 8lb baby. I mean FFS.

Obviously go with the consultant but don’t get pushed into anything you feel uncomfortable about. You are always entitled to a second opinion.

I was told I had this was referred to fetel meds and was told fluid levels where fine and she didn't know why they sent me

My mum had this with my brother. He developed mild kidney problems due to the increased fluid but was discharged before he was 1 as it all resolved. He was a bit under 9lb at 37 weeks, she had a ELCS which was planned anyway but was told lots of polydraminos babies don't engage very well.

Almost identical story to yours OP. Except it was my first pregnancy.

I had a planned C Section at 39 weeks. DS was 11lb 6ozs. Almost exactly as they estimated at the growth scan.

I didn’t have to have a section, no one forced me but I preferred to have it planned than to have complications and end up with an emergency.

I had similar measurements and weekly scans from 28 weeks due to polyhydramnios.. GTT and Torch came back negative so they weren't sure what caused it. Suddenly at 34 weeks the fluid reduced to normal levels. Doesn't happen for everyone but they did say that it is common for fluid to fluctuate and it can just sort itself out.

If it hasn't, they said it can be more difficult for the baby to engage and they would probably want me in straight away if my waters broke but they didn't seem overly concerned.

Try not to worry - it's good they are keeping an eye on you and you never know it could rectify itself Smile

Yes and scans are renowned to be inacurate.

I measured 4 weeks ahead throughout and then at 38 weeks I measured 47 weeks.

Scans said she was already 11lbs and she came at 39 weeks 8 lbs 2. I wouldn't worry personally

I had two planned CS for the same reason. Both my boys were transverse because they were swimming. Both weighed over 9 pounds at 38 weeks . The main concern was chord prolapse if natural labour had happened. They are 24 and 19 now and intelligent, healthy and happy guys !!
