Anyone had it while breast feeding? Had my baby early before i could get it done at my gp when pregnant now im thinking i should go get it to try and give my baby some protection.

I would get it done now. With my second child I had the flu jab a week before birth. It takes 2 weeks to build up antibodies so would have been present in my breast milk a week after birth. Get that protection for you and baby ASAP. X

Absolutely not. It won’t give your daughter protection.

PrincessSarene · 02/11/2019 13:57

@BlueGingerale Why do you say absolutely not? Even if it doesn’t pass on much protection to her baby, OP should still get the flu jab so that she doesn’t get flu herself.

OP, the NHS says the flu vaccine is safe to have while breastfeeding, so I’d recommend that you get it anyway. Then you won’t be ill with flu with a baby to look after!

Well it's safe during pregnancy, so I presume it's safe during breastfeeding, but just double check. It will protect you anyway, which means you won't be sick looking after a baby, not sure if it passes through to baby

It won't pass through your breastmilk to the baby (it also doesn't cross the placenta in pregnancy - it's recommended in pregnancy because the mother is more susceptible to flu due to her suppressed immune system, not to protect the baby).
But it offers the baby some indirect protection in that if you don't get the flu then you can't pass it on to them.
I imagine it's pretty grim trying to look after a newborn whilst struggling with the flu; that in itself would convince me to get it in your position.

Jollitwiglet · 02/11/2019 17:21

Yep I have it yearly and the last 2 years I have been breastfeeding. Antibodies do pass through breastmilk so may provide a little protection to baby, although I'm not 100% sure that's the case with the flu jab, but either way it's good to protect yourself

Have a look for what actual studies have been done about it’s safety if you want to be sure.
