Blood test help please

12 weeks today with twins and just received the results of the blood tests I had done at booking appt.

Background to explain why I am so anxious - dd1 was born with a severe genetic condition (still undiagnosed so cant be tested for in this pregnancy) and died at the start of this year. Midwife at booking was less than caring and will see me again at 20 weeks/ will see consultant at 34 weeks. I am in process of changing hospitals.

Blood results show I am rhesus negative and may need the injections if one of the twins is positive. I was not rhesus neg in my last pregnancy- is it possible for this to change? If so, is it a problem/ can it cause any issues to the babies?

Second thing, my TSH is 0.10. Range is 0.27-4.2. What does this mean? There is a note saying this will be reviewed at the obstetric appt (which I don’t have yet).

Any help would be great - hopefully I am worrying unnecessarily!

It’s not possible for your Rhesus factor to change. I’d question that significantly!

TSH isn’t a routine screen in pregnancy so I’d be questioning that also. It’s to do with your thyroid function, so unless you have history or thyroid issues they shouldn’t be routinely screening for it.

@lj8893 thank you! Hmmm this is all very strange. I don’t have thyroid issues. She did take 7 vials of blood though (no idea why) and said normal is to take 3.

She shouldn’t be taking any blood from you without explicitly explaining what each test is for and gaining your consent for each one.
I think you have a lot of questions, and perhaps complaints, to be making.

I’m wondering if your blood tests have been mixed up, or they’ve sent a letter out to you in error. Rhesus factor cannot change. You need to contact your midwife for a repeat blood test or so she can check your results personally on the computer system.

Im B positive. My previous midwife said that we would have to keep an eye on this as they can change to negative, extremely rare but that's what I was told too. Had no idea otherwise.

MyFartWillGoOn · 01/11/2019 10:45

I'm rhesus negative and always have been. Absolutely not something that can change.

The hospital did bloods at 26ish weeks to see if my baby is the same and whether I needed anti-d. They can't test the baby earlier than that I believe. I did have anti d and from what I've looked into and was told, no big issues or problems for baby so please don't worry. Although as others have said, impossible for your blood type to change unless you've had (I think!) bone marrow transplant!

It does sound like a hospital change is best. I have a number of medical issues and am told every time what tests they are conducting and why.

So sorry for your loss earlier this year and best of luck with your twins

Thanks everyone! I am waiting for a midwife to call me back.

I think there must be a confusion/mistake somewhere. Occasionally people who were thought to be rhesus negative in the past will be found to be positive now, because they are a “weak positive” and older types of tests didn’t pick it up. You can’t change the other way. I would ask for copies of the results so that you can see it they have your details on (could be someone else with v similar name) and so that you can see exactly what tests were done.
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your daughter. With that in mind I would expect for you to have been offered an appointment with a fetal medicine specialist (consultant or specialist midwife) already. I wonder if the midwife hasn’t understood what you have been through & so hasn’t escalated things correctly.
If you want to PM & tell me which hospital I might be able to help as I am a specialist in screening & fetal medicine issues. The hospital may be fine but you have been unlucky who you have met.

@nanmumandmidwife I spoke to a midwife this afternoon and I need to have the blood tests repeated. The midwife in the original appt absolutely understood (she left the room crying and not sure what to say). I will pm you!
