expired milk

hi all,

not sure if I'm worried or not, before pregnancy I wouldn't have thought twice about this and would assume I'd know about it if there was something wrong with it ie. smell, chunks. but I noticed milk I used yesterday (30th) had a date of the 29th on it. I used it in a bowl of cereal the morning of 30th and a few decaffeinated teas throughout the day. I'm presuming this will be of no harm to baby? feeling a bit extra sensitive as I was in hospital over the weekend with severe dehydration due to a stomach bug so completely paranoid at the idea of getting so unwell again.

in this scenario would I have known about it if the milk was spoiled, how likely is it only one day after expire date and am I being a bit hysterical cos of recent sickness or is this a genuine thing I should be concerned by?

thanks all x

If the milk was off you'd know all about it just from the smell, you will be fine. I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly.

I wouldn't have thought so. Generally you can tell by smell, taste and sight. If it seemed ok when you consumed it then it probably was. I understand how scary everything can seem and simple things you wouldn't worry about before become major issues. Try to remember that food/milk etc doesn't automatically go off at midnight on the day after it's expiry date. And sometimes you have milk in date which is definitely off. So all in all I think you'll be fine.

Sorry to hear about your hospitalisation. I hope you're better now.

the logical part of my mind is telling me I would be aware of a strange taste or smell when it comes to something like milk and that even if it were it would be me who would get sick not the baby but think I'm just feeling very wary after being so unwell at the weekend. thanks that's true about not automatically going off at midnight - I suppose even if it were I would soon know about it and have another iffy stomach. and yes pregnancy has completely amplified my anxiety! worried about everything!

I am old enough to remember school milk, it was kept outside before we were given it, in the winter it was frozen, in the summer it was always off. I don't remember ever being sick from drinking off milk and I have managed it more than once in my 56 years. You will be fine.

Off milk smells and can be lumpy. You will be fine

I get why you're concerned enough to post (I was very neurotic in pregnancy, it's stressful being someone else's life support machine!), but really best before dates are very conservative because manufacturers want to protect themselves. Generally you're fine for a least a couple of days afterwards.

I'm still using milk with a BB of the 28th. It's fine. I am being more careful than usual (definitely not using meat products after their use-by date, even if they seem fine, and less keen to just cut mould off cheese) but since you know when milk is bad I reckon it's ok to still use.

I’ve used milk that’s 2 weeks out of date and still smelled and tasted absolutely fine. Not a chunk in sight Grin
It depends how good your fridge is. My mum never believed me and assumed I must be drinking sour milk until she got a new fridge and voila, hers suddenly lasted past it’s date too. You will be fine Wink

GrumpyHoonMain · 01/11/2019 02:18

If you refrigerate at 4 degrees then milk can last up to a week past it’s use by date.
