Recurrent Miscarriage - Advice and positive stories needed please

I had a third miscarriage (in a row and within 10 months) 2 weeks ago. Because we have had 3 in a row this is classed as recurrent miscarriage and affects 1% of couples.

My first happened naturally around 5 weeks.

My second was a heterotopic pregnancy resulting in emergency surgery to have one of my tubes removed at just over 5 weeks and an SMM at just over 10 weeks.
My third happened a couple of weeks ago. I was 9 weeks exactly.

We can get pregnant really easily, but every time I have started to spot around the 5 week mark. Does this mean something? Why can I only get to a certain stage every time?

Because I've had 3 in a row, we are being referred for testing on the NHS. We have been told we will have to wait between 6-8 weeks which is fine. Well it's not. There's so much waiting. I want to know why this has happened now, but understand these things take time and my body needs to get back to normal before the tests can be done.

I'm now researching online, trying to find as much information as possible.

Has any got any success stories they can share with me to help keep me positive?
Has anyone been to any clinics they would recommend?

Thank you,
Sara x

@Confused38 I am so so sorry that you have you had to go through all this.

Sounds like you need a break, youve gone through a lot. Maybe think about having the tests later on - it may give you some answers. Although I understand its a lot to go through, do what you makes you feel OK.

I have recently privately paid for a nutritional therapist specialising in fertilty, I have no idea if will help but trying everything. Also awaiting a call from my GP in relation to the tests

I wish you all the best. X

Hi, I know the your posts were 4 years ago but I came across them now in 2024 having had my 3rd miscarriage, all at max 6 weeks, no living children, it appears that I might be hyper fertile... I am based in Aberdeen and was wondering what was your experience with RM Clinic in here, could you recommend any good gynaecologist/ obstetricians/ fertility specialist locally?
I'm waiting for my first appointment at Aberdeen's RM Clinic and also booked in for consultation with prof. Brosens in Coventry, but it will be in July ( feels like forever).
Any advise would be greatly appreciated

So sorry for your losses. I had 2 mcs and after a lot of research due to not wanting to go through that again I decided to take low dose aspirin, I got pregnant straight away and I now have a 2 year old.

once I was pregnant I also had a private consultation in order to get progesterone, I believe that and the aspirin is what resulted in my child making it to term and being born healthy.

good luck xx

Hello, I just came across this thread too and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Aberdeen mentioned so many times. I am currently miscarrying for the third time (8wks). I have a healthy almost 2 year old and am based in Aberdeen. Being referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic (and told the wait is 6-8 weeks). I just wanted to say how helpful this thread has been and it has given me some hope. I'm so sorry so many people have been through the hurt of pregnancy loss. It is a horrible club to be in but I am glad there are supportive people in it!

Great thread, I really hope all the posters got their miracle babies.
I’m also waiting on my recurrent MC clinic referral.

ladycarlotta · 22/04/2024 17:48

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to offer a hug to the people who've found it recently. I've had 7 miscarriages plus one very healthy five-year-old, and am pregnant again just turning 17 weeks so... fingers crossed for this one.

I think it is certainly worth bearing in mind that they so rarely identify a clear reason for recurrent miscarriage, and for some of us we are just the shitty end of the wedge in terms of averages: some women never experience miscarriage, some have just dumb bad luck. I had a pattern of early loss around the 6 week mark but my last 2 miscarriages were 13 weeks after very slow growth on scans. I've no idea whether all my miscarriages were caused some issue with my body or whether some where just spontaneous chromosomal problems that were never compatible with life, and which couldn't have been predicted, helped or controlled for.

We had a raft of tests with the recurrent miscarriage clinic and I was put on folic acid and progesterone pessaries which I don't think make much difference. Our next step would have been pursuing private testing for NK cells etc but then I got pregnant again and this one has so far gone without a hitch. Nobody can explain it. I think that there may be a consistent factor in many of my mcs that hasn't been identified, but I do think some have been utterly random too. It's so hard to ever feel you have all the answers, and that is what makes it extra painful I think. There's never proper closure or sense of control.

Solidarity and crossed fingers for you all x

DiBi · 22/04/2024 22:47

Hello, I only now realised that I unintentionally selected a horrible nickname so now I'm changing to DiBi (from Die - that ment to be german "the" for feminine nouns...)

@Peonyyyy Thank you so much for responding and keeping this thread alive. Great to hear that the aspirin and progesterone did the trick for you! Hopefully this would be the case for me too, but first I would like to do some tests and if nothing obvious comes out I'm sure I'll be on aspirin and progesterone too.

@AKH15 So sorry that you are going though it right now, I hope you have support and manage somehow?
I'm towards the end of my 3rd miscarriage now, so it is very fresh for me and I find myself quite emotional at random times (perhaps hormones?)
I was told the wait is 7 weeks and I'm supposed to get the letter from the clinic with the details. I'll be going to Poland mid May and planning to do some private tests there, I'm putting together a testing wish list at the moment...

@ladycarlotta so very sorry for your losses & congratulations on your pregnancy!
Very wise words from you, obviously coming from the very difficult journey you were (are) going through.
I have mentioned to AKH15 that besides of waiting for the NHS Recurring Miscarriage Clinic and Coventry, I'm planning on (extensive) private testing in Poland, as I will be attending some family events. It feels that 7 weeks and co entry in July are ages away. From this and other threads I learnet that I might not find anything to pin the miscarriages to or find a deficiency to treat but at the moment putting a plan together, booking appointments gives me some sense of agency in a hopeless situation. Do you have any test recommendations that I should try?

@H20202 Thank you for sharing, sorry we had to meet on this forum for the miscarriage reason... Do you know what is your waiting time for the clinic?

AD1986 · 24/04/2024 12:15

Hi,

Sorry for your losses. Its extremely painful.
By way of an update, I had a little girl since my post. For me, I think the diet change helped. I was also prescribed baby aspirin and progesterone to take as soon as I got a bfn.

Since then we've been ttc for baby 2 and I've had another miscarriage. My age of 38 is probably a factor (told by GP!), but trying to stay hopeful.

Wish you all the best xxx

Peonyyyy · 24/04/2024 12:34

Hi @AD1986

congratulations! Sorry to hear you had another mc though ❤️

will you be taking baby aspirin and progesterone again?

if it helps - I have been taking baby aspirin since we started trying for number 2 and I got pregnant the first month. I am now trying to get progesterone asap, only 4 weeks pregnant rn.

good luck x

AD1986 · 24/04/2024 12:53

@Peonyyyy
A massive congratulations!!! That's amazing news. Oh that's interesting, did you just take1 tablet a day?

Yes I've been told to take both again when that time comes.

I'm thinking maybe to go down ivf route due to age etc. 😢

Peonyyyy · 24/04/2024 13:21

@AD1986 thank you, tentatively excited, I’ve had a little brown spotting which makes me think of my mcs which is why I’m hoping to get progesterone soon.

I take 2 x 75mg per day, so 150mg total. I do think it’s the reason why I got pregnant after only one month of trying, as it helps implantation.

good luck -hope you get pregnant again soon or have success with IVF.

AKH15 · 26/04/2024 14:36

Fab to hear success stories - thank you for sharing! I’ve had my appointment letter in today and it’s in mid June. They said to try not to conceive in that time but I feel so strongly that I want to. Did anybody conceive between now and the appointment time? And if so, did you get any support from the EPU? Thanks

AD1986 · 26/04/2024 17:57

I continued to keep trying but wasn't told not to try. I concieved 2 months after my appt. Wish you all the best with it xxx
