Thoughts on downs, Edwards and Patau syndrome results?

Hi all,

I'm after some advise on the blood tests offered through the NHS. I got my results back for the Edwards and Patau's at 1 in 111344 and the Downs as 1 in 5969, although this is lower risk, I don't understand why the number is low in comparison the the Edwards and Patau's.. any thoughts? Also, would you recommend the harmony test? Personally for me I would like to have the option of knowing if my baby will/could have any of the above to ensure time for adjustment etc.

I understand that this may be a touchy subject for some on here but please respect everyone's opinion and advise.

Xx

Edwards and pataus are less rare hence the lower likelihood based on your blood results.

Probably the risk of Downs generally is higher.

I wouldn't bother with further testing at those risk levels, but harmony was only just out when I had mine. If it's not prohibitively expensive for you and it would provide reassurance then I can't see an issue just doing it.

I would have had further testing if I was high risk.

Thank you @Frlrlrubert

@loveyourself87 as others have said it is mainly because of the incidence of these conditions. Downs is much more common than either Edward’s or Patau’s. The calculation takes this into account along with your age, NT (back of the neck) measurement and 2 hormones in your blood. The different conditions are associated with different patterns of hormone levels.
NIPT (one of which is Harmony but many others exist) works in a totally different way to assess the chance of these conditions but looking at bits of fetal DNA in mum’s blood.
Your combined test result is very, very low chance of any of the three conditions. Whilst I understand what you say about being prepared for difference, there are many things more likely to occur that you can’t test for. Often with these three conditions there are clues seen on the 20 week scan. I would suggest keep your money to buy something useful. If any concerns at 20 week scan you could always have a test then, but probably funded by the NHS in that situation.

@loveyourself87 to give you an idea my pregnancy was 1:256 for Edwards. Just out of the 1:250 range which classes you as high risk but those were not odds I was happy with and so I had a NIPT and my daughter did in fact have Edwards syndrome. To be honest once I saw my blood results I knew there was something wrong - my NT measurement was normal and so was skewing the odds into low risk territory.
Your results look like low risks but If they’re still to high for you then yes a harmony or another NIPT is a good idea if you cannot wait for the anomaly scan.

We are getting the harmony done as early as we can🤷‍♀️ We are both a bit older and know we aren’t sure we could cope with dealing with news later on. It’s so personal. I’d say you’re pretty safe with those odds though?

@loveyourself87 i got my results yesterday and i was 1 in 2152 for downs and 1 in 10,000 for edwards and patau.
I'm fine with those results, as you can always be that 1 even with a low result.
My friend got whisked into another room at her 12 week scan because of the measurement and was given a 1 in 66 chance of downs and her baby is fine. She had the harmony test but i still don't believe it gives you a yes or no, it's still a chance answer.
If you feel you need the harmony test and can afford it, then no harm in doing so.
