Cheapest place for gaviscon?

I’m suffering from quite a lot of heartburn, and the gaviscon chewables really seem to help, but I’ve got another 10 weeks or so of pregnancy to go, and they’re costing me a small fortune. Where’s the cheapest ones you’ve found? And/or is there any other remedies that could help?
I should have stocked up when I saw them on special offer a few weeks ago!

Can you not get it on prescription? My sister used to glug the liquid stuff directly out the bottle

Amanduh · 29/10/2019 17:17

I find the liquid much better, £2 for asda etc own brand bottle, or midwife/dr will give it on script if it’s horrific (I was getting through humongous bottles last pregnancy!)

Jellyshoeshurtmyfeet · 29/10/2019 17:17

Go into the pharmacy and ask for the own brand equivalent of Gaviscon. I got s huge bottle in Boots a couple of weeks ago for a quarter of the price. It's all the same ingredients.

Moominfan · 29/10/2019 17:22

Home bargains x

Times10 · 29/10/2019 17:27

Thanks! I don’t think I can get it on prescription, I saw a poster in the gp surgery saying they no longer offer over the counter prescriptions, but I guess it’s worth checking.

Hadn’t thought of own brand stuff, so will definitely ask about it!

I will try the liquid, and see if it works as well, I have been impressed with the chewable ones, as it really does seem to work quickly!

I've been drinking the boots or tesco liquid straight from the bottle and find it really helps

VaguelySkeletal · 29/10/2019 20:12

I find the liquid better than the tablets. I've trued own-brands, and don't think they're as good. (Though I haven't tried Asda's one.) they don't all have exactly the same proportions of ingredients. Maybe that makes a difference.

Costco is the cheapest, I find. And the biggest bottles, too.

Try ranitidine instead. One tablet lasts a whole day. Don't get branded stuff like Zantac, just cheap, supermarket own brand. Wilko and Tesco used to have own brand but I'm going back a couple of years since I've needed it. You can get gaviscon and ranitidine and if really bad omeprazole on prescription too.

I feel your pain!!! I’ve got a massive bottle of Sainsbury’s own liquid, it is absolutely disgusting and makes me gag when I swallow it because of how thick it is (really not selling it am I haha) but works so much better than tablets!! And half the price of gaviscon!! X

UpToonGirl · 29/10/2019 20:43

I'm not usually one to be a scaremongerer (is that a word?!) but I would do a little research before you buy anything, they are recalling a lot of heartburn/indigestion medication at the moment.

I haven't read up on it too much so might be talking out of my arse but I thought I would mention it!

Shaunieh95 · 29/10/2019 21:18

You can get peptac on prescription which is basically gaviscon. I've got a huge bottle on prescription you can get mint or aniseed x

Times10 · 29/10/2019 21:37

Thanks for all the ideas, I'll be stocking up ASAP! I'll check with the midwife at my next appointment, about the recalls, but my gaviscon packet says it's ok to use in pregnancy.
I'm assuming it's going to get worse as the pregnancy progresses?

@UpToonGirl - I’m guessing your referring to the recall of Zantac in the US? The UK haven’t stopped prescribing it as yet and there is zero concern at all over gaviscon or rennie etc.

They’ve found tiny traces of a cancer causing compound in a specific brand of ranitidine in the States. But at the moment, they think it’s probably contaminated medication as opposed to an issue with the ranitidine itself. Hence why it hasn’t been pulled here, as we don’t use that supplier. We make our own in the UK.

OP- I think the NHS has now cut gaviscon being prescribed as it was costing them too much. Similarly to how you can’t get paracetamol and over the counter pain meds prescribed anymore. They had a big cut back a while ago!

UpToonGirl · 29/10/2019 22:28

@bol87 ah didn't realise it was just the US, as I said I'm not usually one to scaremonger!

Times10 · 29/10/2019 23:24

@Bol87 thanks for the update, re recalls, and confirmation about prescription. Luckily I haven't needed the gp for a while, so I only knew about the prescription issue from the poster in the surgery, but I am glad there's alternatives for me to try instead of gaviscon as the cost was adding up!

I saw the gaviscon tablets in pound land today. I dont know what price they usually sell at but thought I'd let you know

Times10 · 30/10/2019 21:36

Oh thanks! I’ll have a look there.

You can buy peptac (which is the generic equivalent of liquid gaviscon) cheaply over the counter in pharmacies.

Reallybadidea · 31/10/2019 10:48

You can buy tubs of 60 tablets from online pharmacies if you Google. Usually about a fiver which is going to work out a lot cheaper!
