Hello,

I've just found out I'm pregnant with my first and it's been almost 3 years of waiting for us so I'm very keen to ask lots of questions about what to expect Smile.

I've read that they can do the first scan between 8-14 weeks.

Do you think I may get a scan at my first app?

Will they do bloods or anything? X

So your first app is your booking appointment they will go through medical history etc with you and yes you will have your bloods took. You will then be booked in for your dating scan for around your 12 week mark. You wont have a scan at your booking appointment x

Congratulations!

At my booking in appointment I had blood test and a urine sample taken. Lots of medical history questions, diabetes risk, twins in the family and making sure how I was feeling any sickness with the pregnancy etc and my mental health (happy about the pregnancy etc) asked if we had questions. Checked my height and weight.

My scan is next week at 12 weeks and was sent through from the hospital definitely not done at the booking in appointment.

Congratulations! Hope all goes well for you.

I was 9 weeks at my booking appointment. It's basically a lot of paperwork, urine sample, bloods, BMI check, yours and partners family history of certain diseases. I was also scanned but then told to come back in 3 weeks for the 12 week scan as baby was too small for accurate measurements.

Not wanting to disappoint but my 8 week appointment was a complete waste of time, I booked time off work and was expecting more but it was basically an introduction to midwife and to run through my self filled out form confirming hospital and address... she then referred me to hospital for booking appointment. This took all of 5 minutes...

Must be dependent on area and hopefully yours is more informative than mine!

@bellebox19 Congrats, exciting isn't it :) My booking in experience was fine. Took a little while though (about hour and a half) as lots of paperwork to fill in and they took blood and urine sample. Best check with your midwife locally though so check what happens in your area.

Thanks Ladies 😊.

I've booked an early scan for when I'll be just over 6 weeks, just to hopefully put my mind at rest slightly!

I'm in Scotland so not sure if it'll be the same process here.

Probably not all as exciting an appointment as originally thought lol! Xx

Just here to say, congratulations!

My first appointment was at 6 weeks +5. It was actually really useful, and i am glad Dh came with me. They asked both mine and dh history, we did get a scan and first pictures as well as listening to the heartbeat.

Wannabegreenfingers · 29/10/2019 15:04

Congratulations.....

Just be aware that an early scan at 6 weeks, might show very little, including no heartbeat.

After several miscarriages and due to a need for medication I had an early scan at 5 weeks 3 days and all that was seen from an internal scan was a flicker - baby's heart beat, It was 7 weeks before we saw anything resembling a baby - well looked more like a jelly baby at 7 weeks and again needed to be internal, we had another at 9 weeks (again internal) - more baby like and then the dating scan at 12 weeks - definitely looked like a little baby. As hard as it is to wait, the early scan's aren't all that reassuring, especially if the baby is in a awkward place and they won't/don't do internal scans.

I'd recommend an early scan at 8 weeks - you will see far more.

GeePipe · 29/10/2019 15:07

I had my booking in appointment today. I was asked loads of health questions and that was it. No blood was taken no urine taken just questions.

bellebox19 · 29/10/2019 15:14

@Wannabegreenfingers

I'll be 6+2 and I've been reading about the chance of seeing a heartbeat, it's an internal viability scan I've booked.

I'm worried about the chance that we won't see anything/a heartbeat but also kind of thinking about the chance I will too. It's a tough one. I'm just desperate see that it's real, I'm still in disbelief right now 🙂. I'll go back later on if they don't see anything at that point. I'm one of those annoying people that always wants reassurance Sad.

So sorry to hear about your struggles xx

Thank you for your kind words.

I hope you didnt think I was scare mongering. Im just aware that not every one will see that longed for heart beat so early. Hopefully your baby will play ball and you'll get a lovely flickery heart beat scan x

Lozzy25 · 29/10/2019 15:35

I just want to say congratulations! I am 6+3 now and we had a private viability early scan on Sunday when I was 6+1 and we saw the tiny baby and also the heartbeat. The lady who did my scan said we was very lucky to see the heartbeat that early Smile it is possible to see it but try not to worry if not as every pregnancy is individual!

nicannie · 29/10/2019 15:50

@bellebox19 congratulations! I'm in Scotland too. Had my booking in app with midwife at around 9 weeks, they came to my house so I never got my bloods taken. They just ask a lot of medical questions about you, as well as some about your baby's father.

I then got booked in for my 12 weeks scan through the NHS after this. But as I had a lot of bleeding early on, I went for an early scan at 8+2 days, I must say, although reassuring, you really don't see much! Just a little bean to show there is a pregnancy there and it's really happening!

Good luck with everything xx
