Link between weight gain & big babies?!

I'm just trying to figure out if weight gain during pregnancy relates to having a bigger baby? I've put on about a stone and a half at 25weeks and with the way it's been packing on, I'll probs have reached over the 3st mark by the time I get to term. For those who have had 'larger' babies, did you notice that you'd put on a lot of weight during pregnancy or am I worrying over nothing? I'm only 5ft 1 and quite petite normally so the thought of having a 10lb-er is a little bit scary!

Sorry I'm not exactly sure and can't say from experience as my baby was 50th centile at birth, but if you're normally petite and slim, you're likely to put on more weight NCT

Also the baby is just part of your weight gain, it's also placenta, fluids etc.

Did you have a 20-week scan? You can see the (approximate) measurements of baby in a graph there and how it compares to the average.

I don't think baby size relates to weight gain unless there is gestational diabetes.

Boymummy3 · 29/10/2019 10:43

1st pregnancy I put on 10lb I had a 7lb 11oz baby... I put around 3 stone on with my 2nd pregnancy I literally ate everything possible lol and had a 9lb 8oz baby... on my 3rd pregnancy now I've put about 5lb on I'm 27 weeks measure 4 weeks ahead and my baby is forecast to be big.. Est 10lb1oz .. there is no link to say that the amount of weight you put on means your baby will be bigger.
Dont forget baby has weight and also fluid etc so all of your weight gain wont just be you it will be baby etc too. X

No, shorter women generally do put more weight on in pregnancy and can look a lot bigger than taller women, but taller women still tend to produce bigger babies. Your size has nothing to do with the baby’s size. Case in point - I am 35 weeks pregnant, 5 ft 7, have actually lost weight (nausea started at 16 weeks) and am projected to have a 8-10 pounder.

Winterdaysarehere · 29/10/2019 10:49

Dc1 I put 2 stone on and she was 6-3. Dc 2 only 1 stone and he was 9 - 3!!

MamatobeFeb20 · 29/10/2019 13:03

Thanks for your replies everyone, shows there's no rhyme or reason really eh?
@grumpyhoonmain - I knew it always looked like smaller women put on more weight cos there's literally nowhere for baby to go apart from out lol but do we actually put on more weight too? Taller people carry so well in my opinion!
@paperplant - I'm gonna go back and check my 20week measurements actually!
I guess as long as I'm eating (fairly) healthily then the rest is down to genetics/if any medical conditions rear their ugly head!

First pregnancy-put on 2 stone and ds was 7lb 13

Second pregnancy - weighed less at 40 weeks than I did pre pregnancy and dd was 8lb

fancytiles · 29/10/2019 21:52

Not sure but I've gained a stone so far and am 32.5 weeks and my baby is 82nd percentile for my gestation! They are saying he will be between 8 and 9lbs.

MamatobeFeb20 · 30/10/2019 12:22

So you were the opposite @pinkflipflop85! @fancytiles - god help me if that's all you've put on, for when i get to 32weeks haha! Have you got a big bump or was there another reason they referred you for a growth scan?

I put in between 4.5 and 5 stone in both pregnancies. DS was 6lb 1oz and DD was 7lb 11oz

paperplant · 30/10/2019 15:30

Just a note, take the scan measurements with a pinch of salt, i've read a lot of posts on here which say that theirs were wildly out!

mistermagpie · 30/10/2019 17:23

I put on four stone with DS1 (I was quite underweight to begin with so this perhaps not as bad as it sounds!). He was 6lb 10, so I'm not sure there is a correlation.

I'm big again this time and it looks like baby is big too but it's my third and I do think they tend to get bigger!

fancytiles · 31/10/2019 17:56

Everyone puts on different amounts, and there isn't really a correct amount to gain as long as the baby is healthy. My friend put on 5 stone and her baby was 6lbs but I've only put on a stone and been told mine is huge 🤷‍♀️

PipsM · 31/10/2019 18:03

I put on 5kg (didn’t eat much for the first 16 weeks due to nausea) and baby was 4.5kg! No one could believe what a big baby he was! He’s still 95th centile now for height and weight but all in proportion at 17 months.

nocluewhattodoo · 31/10/2019 18:07

I miraculously gained three stone (I had severe HG for the whole 40 weeks) and DD was 7lb 8. I was back in my jeans in a week, I think all the weight must have been the amniotic fluid, which when it eventually exploded out of me was biblical flood levels Grin

misspiggy19 · 31/10/2019 18:12

Friend put on 4 stone during her pregnancy and gave birth to a 6lb baby.

Buyitinbamboo · 31/10/2019 18:31

1st baby I put on 2st, she was 10lb6 at 39 weeks, no GD.

Currently 38 weeks with no 2. Put on 4st Blush but hes measuring smaller, expected about 8lb at 40 weeks, we shall see!

OhTheTastyNuts · 31/10/2019 19:03

With both pregnancies i put on around 1.5 stones (from roughly 8.5 stones to 10 stones). Babies were both 9lb.

DaisyMay25 · 31/10/2019 19:07

I've read recently that weight gain in the first trimester results in bigger babies.
I don't believe this research at all.
I lost 1kg in my first trimester, I'm currently 31 weeks and have gained about 8kg so far and baby is measuring on the 85th percentile according to scans and 95th according to tape measure 🤷🏼‍♀️

LolaSmiles · 31/10/2019 19:15

It depends on what sort of weight gain and mum's habits.

I've gained quite a lot of weight when pregnant (third trimester) but from the back you can't really tell I'm pregnant. It's all baby, bump and boob. Baby is big but my midwife isn't concerned because I'm eating well.

I've also known other people who've gained weight due to gestational diabetes and that's led to bigger babies.

I've also known people who've taken eating for two literally, or kept eating the same as when they were exercising 3 times a week or eating a lot of sweet treats and takeaway because they're pregnant. They gained weight everywhere and had babies with a range of sizes.

Bluerussian · 31/10/2019 19:56

Oh bless you. You are a small person but small people have babies same as everyone else, most of my mother's family were very little (some under five feet), and had no problems.

I put on a lot of weight ( a very lot), in the early stages of pregnancy - because I decided I would put it on anyway so I not only ate for two but three :-). Yes I was quite heavy, but well; I'm 5'5" and I gave birth to a baby just over 6.5 pounds! Hardly a massive child, lower limits of normal weight.

You can't always tell, don't worry about it. As long as you are well and when you have ante natal appointments, the medical staff are happy, you'll be fine.

Congratulations by the way !

Cotswoldmama · 17/11/2019 18:06

I gained 3 stone started at 7 stone! My son was 7lbs 6oz I think that's bang on average weight for a boy.
