Exposed to dog medicine during pregnancy

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice.

My mums dog received some treatments at the vets today - a solution to put on her tail and paw and a cream to apply after as she's been chewing and the marks are almost infected. Dog starting antibiotics soon as well.

I offered to help my mum administer the first lot of topical treatments as the dog can be a bit fussy so I did, then panicked and realised I'd not read the packaging and not worn gloves either!

The solution gives me not much info but the cream/gel says to wear single use gloves and pregnant women should take extra care to avoid accidental exposure.

The dog has since been walking around on the carpet and so have I (with bare feet) but I have washed my hands. Worried because I might have the cream on my shoes/socks as I put them on in the house.

Rang mat triage and they couldn't give me an answer and recommended to ring my vet (who is now closed).

I'm panicking! Sad can't believe I was so stupid and irresponsible.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Cream/gel stuff is called Betafuse and solution is Hibitane Plus (I think - that label isn't very clear).

Thank you

Op I wouldn't worry too much I often give my dog his monthly advocate with no gloves and sometimes forget and stroke him afterwards.

Not exactly the same, but I did similar with a pesticide for tics which attacks the tics neurological system and apparently as that is what it focuses on such pesticides can cause brain defects in babies. I panicked washed my hands and then worried for several weeks afterwards. I actually had nothing to worry about, but I know the feeling! I'm sure you'll be fine op. X

Honestly there’s nothing do worry about, you’ve not had long exposure to the cream for it to effect your baby.

Here’s a list of the ingredients in the Betafuse.

The only issue would be long term use of the cream as it’s got steroids in it (you can check the risks in pregnancy on the BNF (link below). But after having a quick look at the BNF you’ve absolutely nothing to worry about.

Hibatane is just a pre operative skin disinfectant which is also used in obstetrics, so is also safe.

If in doubt of using any medication in pregnancy and if breastfeeding check the BNF (British National Formulary) it’s what Drs and other healthcare professionals refer to.

Thank you all for your replies! It is greatly appreciated

Especially @Blahblahblahnanana - that has made me feel so much better!

I have been to 111 and they said be extra careful washing thoroughly wear shoes/slippers etc in the house as it's on her paw but I think I can breathe a bit now!

It's a commonly used skin disinfectant. I use it every day. It can be a little astringent so may be a bit drying. But you have NOTHING to worry about you have not harmed your baby, i promise

TheoriginalLEM · 28/10/2019 22:30

And yes, betafuse will also do no harm, you would want to wear gloves for repeated application due to steroids but please try and stop worrying.

I think 111 is being ever so slightly OTT fuckingridiculous

Duggeeismysaviour · 28/10/2019 22:37

If it helps put your mind at rest, I'm a vet and I have contact with this stuff a fair amount. Now pregnant with b dc2. I do wash my hands afterwards but I'm never concerned as the amount I'm exposed to with a single /occasional use (rather than a course of treatment) is negligible-baby even less so Flowers

tigerfeets · 29/10/2019 10:38

@Duggeeismysaviour thank you that does help a lot!

@TheoriginalLEM I know it's ridiculous but I suffer from contamination related OCD - been in and out of therapy for years with it. I know it's irrational but I sometimes struggle to cope.

You are not ridiculous!!! 111 were ridiculous to give you that advice. Even more so because you were clearly worrying too much, they should have reassured you, advised to wear gloves if you needed to apply it again as would be the advice to anyone. The trouble with 111 is that the operators are not medically trained and are literally following computer algorithms.

tigerfeets · 31/10/2019 14:21

@TheoriginalLEM sorry I misunderstood!
