Baby weighs 6lb11oz at 36 weeks?!

Just had a scan. Estimated current weight of baby is 6lb11oz and the abdominal circumference is at 97th percentile. Overthinking this now. Haven't been offered GTT scan, BMI was 27 at booking in and I have avoided the scales throughout the whole pregnancy so no idea what I weigh now but looking at photos of me, I know I've put on quite a bit of weight.

My sister said that her babies were estimated to be 10ld-ers at full term but were way under that at around 8lb when born. My first was 8lb 4oz.

Can anyone offer me any advice as feeling slightly worried about it all at the minute! Is the high AC cause for concern? My MW appt isn't until Thurs.

At my 37 week scan baby was 7lb 2oz. Doesn't seem too far off from yours? All measurements in range, though.

Boymummy3 · 28/10/2019 16:05

Is your baby still measuring along the same line from other measurements from scans etc?? Your midwife will probally speak with you about it at your appointment if their I'd any concerns.
At my 20 week scan my babys belly is measuring top line whereas the rest of him smaller I did get sent for GTT but that's also because my belly measurements are also 4 week ahead. Anyway I had a scan at 25 weeks babys belly is still top line but the sonographer said hes just going to be a big baby & hes still following his line and not to worry about it unless his measurements went alot higher/lower. Est at 25 weeks was 2lb. From his chart est weight at birth I'd around 10lb 1 which I'm not looking forward too but I've also seen alot who say their growth scans was completely incorrect and when estimated to be having massive babies have actually had reasonably sized ones lol. My last baby was 9lb 8oz so I'm expecting it myself x

Growth scans have quite a big margin for error so take any measurements/weight guesses with a pinch of salt. Chat to your midwife about your concerns but if there was any potential issues you'd have been told or seen straight away.

With my first I was told at 36 weeks baby wasn't growing and would be 5lbs at most when born. She was born at 37 weeks and 7lbs 6.
Baby #2 is due in a few weeks and growth scan at 32 weeks showed this one is big- tummy on 97th centile and everything else 89th-95th and estimated weight 5lbs 3oz (projected 10lbs+ at 40 weeks). I was seen by a midwife straight after the scan and referred for another GTT, diagnosed with GD a week later, full management and induction plan put in place same day as diagnosis.

The thought of a 9lb+ baby is terrifying (especially when at 32 weeks it's head circumference was measuring at 36 and weeks 😳 ) but I've heard more stories of growth scans being wildly inaccurate than them being right, so try not to worry yourself too much.

rollon2020 · 28/10/2019 16:24

We had DD scanned a week before she was due, they said she was 7lb 11 at that point. DH side were all big babies, so I was very nervous!

Ten days later she arrived at 6lb 11
They aren't always particularly accurate

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 28/10/2019 16:31

What is the projected weight at term? DS was forecast to be 10lb at 40 weeks, he was delivered by forceps at 40+11 At 10lb11. So I think the 10lb at term was spot on.

But it was fine, I only put on 8kg over the pregnancy, but I had a bmi of 30 I think, I'm fairly overweight tbh. The forceps was fine though, really.

OlderthenYoungerNow · 28/10/2019 16:50

Doesn't give me the estimated weight at full time specifically but I've attached a photo of the GROW chart.

The AC was around 75th percentile at 23 weeks, and weight was at 50th. Now at 36 weeks, AC is at 97th percentile and weight at 75th.

The head and femur are around 40th percentile by the looks of things and always have been.

I've been really struggling with SPD this pregnancy and can hardly move around. I'm still at work full time at the minute and feel quite anxious about it all. I'm projecting all my fears into this slightly worrying measurement I think 😣

My measurements were similar to yours and dd was 6lb10 estimated at 36+4.
She arrived at 40+3 spontaneous quickish labour and weighed 8lb7oz, which if you go on the premise that baby gains 1oz a day from 37 weeks works out about accurate.

asmv · 28/10/2019 16:57

I really wouldnt take that on board. My baby was supposedly 6lb at term and i gave birth to an 8lb 2oz beast (im a short and small person)

AllFourOfThem · 28/10/2019 16:58

I’ve had three babies with very high abdominal measurements (two were off the centile chart) and I’ve never had gestational diabetes; it’s just how I grow babies.

OlderthenYoungerNow · 28/10/2019 16:59

Half blood princess: excellent, that's what I want!

And perhaps the abdominal circumference is from the baby just having taken on lots of fluid at that precise moment. I'll go for that.

I'm keen for a home birth this time round you see!

A six almost seven pounder at 36 weeks is normal. I am nearly 35 weeks and have a grow scan at 36 weeks - mw and consultant said they’d be happy provided the baby is under 8 pounds.

keepingbees · 28/10/2019 17:03

My DD was estimated about that at 35 weeks. There was no concern, I was just told she would be well into the 9lbs. She went 10 days overdue and was 10lbs at birth. She was born at home after a quick easy labour, don't panic Smile

CallieCat19 · 28/10/2019 17:26

Try not to panic! During my growth scans my baby was always in the 99th percentile, and always had comments saying she was going to be a very big baby and to expect her to be over 10 pounds but when it came to it she ended up being 8 pounds and looked super dinky! It’ll be okay

Blahblahblahnanana · 28/10/2019 17:45

What is the reason why are you having extra scans?

The growth scans are an estimation of baby’s weight, so try not to worry that your baby will be large. To find out what your baby’s estimated birth weight it, look at the bottom line of the graph for 40 weeks gestation and follow it up to the percentile curve you’re currently following the weight is on the right hand side of the chart.

OlderthenYoungerNow · 28/10/2019 18:19

I'm not having an extra scan. My area does three scans as standard now. It's new, and different to when I had my daughter in 2018 when it was the usual two scans at 12 and 20 weeks.

Honestly? They all hurt the same anyway! I’ve had a 10lber (at home) and yes it hurt but no more than subsequent (8,8 and 8,15) births.

Plus you don’t find out until after they’re born how much they weigh and by then it’s all over and done with.

Good luck.

TheFairyCaravan · 28/10/2019 18:33

DS2 was 8lbs when he was born at 37 weeks. I had really severe SPD and he flew out. It was a much easier birth than DS1 who was 8lb3oz at 41wks.

CobaltLoafer · 28/10/2019 18:38

I’d try not to worry as scan predictions are notoriously unreliable. In my case one was correct (10lb) another was a pound out (9lb). Neither were any worse than my first 8lb baby, in fact both easier! And in fact the both the big ones were quick labours, nine pounder came out on rails Grin

Blahblahblahnanana · 28/10/2019 19:06

Ah that’s good that they do an extra growth scan, all trusts should adopt the policy.

Sewingbea · 28/10/2019 19:15

I had a very late scan at 41 weeks with DD1. Sonographer said, with great confidence, that baby would be 10 lb at least. DD was born 24 hours later and weighed 8 lb 4 oz, which was smack on the middle of my predicted growth by height chart. I have no faith in estimates from scans now!
Good luck with the home birth. My DD2 was born at home and it was a wonderful experience. Hope all goes smoothly for you too @OlderthenYoungerNow Smile

Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful. Phew.
