Tramadol in pregnancy

Hi,
I’m in the early stages of pregnancy and have an auto immune disease what causes golf ball size abscesses in various parts of my body.
I was prescribed tramadol two years ago and have been on 300mg daily since then as it is the only thing what touches the pain and enables me to actually parent my other child without being in constant agony 🙈 Since I have found out I was pregnant I have tried to half my dose- obviously I know I need to do this with my GP (can’t get appointment till next week) as I need to taper off as I’m guessing I will go through withdrawals.
But I am so scared of being in constant pain. Has anyone taken tramadol during pregnancy or advised for/against it. I’m just looking for any advice till I can actually speak to my doctor.
Thankyou xx

My neurologist advised against it quite strongly.

He told me there was a little evidence (not overwhelming or fully proven) that said there may be a small risk to baby in utero but that it wasn’t confirmed - and in that respect if I needed it then fine and he’d still be happy if I took it as a one off or a very short period at certain points in pregnancy.

He said that what had been better confirmed was With regular/daily use, that there is a high risk of a opiate dependent baby being born and having to go through withdrawal at birth which they need to stay I hospital with and can last a little while and make them poorly. So because of that we made an alternative plan.

I’m assuming you are under a specialist for your autoimmune, could you call them in the meantime for guidance? It is definitely not a good idea to taper off yourself without speaking to someone. I’d probably tell my GP it was urgent and needed a same day appointment ... but that’s just me!

On another note, have you researched how pregnancy impacts on your particular condition? You may find that pregnancy could be helpful as your hormones build up, which will help with day to day pain levels. I’ve gone from being reliant on pregablin, amytriptiline and opiates to cooing quite comfortably with paracetamol and heat so far, with the option of codeine if I need it.
