Hi ladies,

My partners motorbike has lived in our conservatory attached to the living room and kitchen for about 6 months as he won’t keep it outside and no garage. At first it stunk but now I’m used to the smell so I don’t notice it . MIL been round today and kindly reminded me via phone how much it stinks and that because iv been so poorly in pregnancy it could be that. I suppose iv been breathing in the fumes most days when sat in my living room? Even tho it’s not in the same room you can smell the fumes through the house. I’m so scared something bad will happen to my baby please tell me I’m being dramatic Sad x

It's just the smell of motor oil, isn't it? It's not permanently idling!
Pretty sure you're fine.

Pinkblueberry · 19/10/2019 19:09

Is it running with the engine on in your house?? I’m very confused Confused where are the fumes coming from?

LouiseLouisa87 · 19/10/2019 19:10

What? Precious first born by any chance?Hmm

Emmaemmaemmaemma · 19/10/2019 19:12

Yes it’s my first born as you may tell! Just the MIL has got me worried! It’s not run inside but it has diesel in the engine and the smell comes from that and seeps around the house so I’m breathing it in. Please tell me I’m being dramatic Blush

In if you can't be pleasant don't bother answering ffs.

Emmaemmaemmaemma · 19/10/2019 19:14

It’s my first after a miscarriage so I worry a lot

Of course you’re being dramatic. You can’t wrap yourself in cotton wool and you won’t be able to do that when the baby is born

Stripyhoglets1 · 19/10/2019 19:17

It's a fire risk and breathing in diesel fumes is hardly ideal. He needs to keep it outside preferably now and definately when your baby arrives.

Lunafortheloveogod · 19/10/2019 19:19

Just for a safety once you have a toddler perspective you can get outdoor bike shelters that are apparently quite sturdy, like fabric things that are waterproof n raised above the bike not just a wrap over. Maybe invest in something like this now so he can test it before there’s a toddler trying to clamber at it.. win win if it gets it out the house quicker.

Whataboutthattthen · 19/10/2019 19:21

Why are people so mean? It’s perfectly normal to be worried in early pregnancy. Every time I open the paper there is another study about this and that affecting babies, it’s no wonder people don’t wrap themselves in cotton wool.

I remember being worried when my apt block was getting painted when I was about 8 weeks.

Op, I imagine the smell could be sickening but am sure the baby is fine as the bike is not running. I wouldn’t like the smell myself. All the best, hope you enjoy the pregnancy.

JenniferM1989 · 19/10/2019 19:23

Some of the replies are so rude.

I think you need to get the motorbike out of the house. The inhaling of the diesel fumes likely won't cause much harm but when you start to feel sick and get headaches, this will just make it so much worse. It belongs outside with a cover over it in the back garden.

Congratulations on your pregnancy ♥️

Thesearmsofmine · 19/10/2019 19:23

Well I don’t think it will hurt baby but your partner needs to think about what he is going to do with the bike when baby is here because babies are on the move before you know it!

Also MIL should be telling her son, not you!

Slappadabass · 19/10/2019 19:26

I dont think it could do any serious damage but the smell of fumes give me a headache, I absolutely love the smell of a petrol station but if I'm there a while my head starts hurting.
And it's definitely not safe having a bike in the house once the baby starts walking though so he will have to find somewhere for it before then.

Ignore the mean comments, ofcorse your worried. I remember been worried about every little thing when I was pregnant with my first, and I was only slightly better with my second. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

Newsheet · 19/10/2019 19:26

It’s very, very unlikely that a motorbike runs on diesel.

I have never heard of a diesel bike. What model is it?

(Misses point of thread)

OdddSocks · 19/10/2019 19:27

Your MIL is absolutely correct. Yes, fumes do emanate from them and can affect your breathing - especially if you have asthma.

Also, a motorbike has petrol in it - what the heck is he doing putting a motorbike with petrol in a house, it's a hell of a fire risk! It is so dangerous! Get it outside ASAP!

Ignor the pp's who are telling you that you are being dramatic - you're not - and that you can't wrap yourself in cotton wool. .That bike should not be in the house.

.......and I say this as a biker of some 40 years.

Your partner should know better

This is from a quick google:

Newsheet · 19/10/2019 19:33

Give over ffs

That article is about fumes from Diesel engines that are running.

This is a bike in storage that isn’t running, and I would be almost certain it’s not diesel anyway

Emmaemmaemmaemma · 19/10/2019 19:35

Thanks all, your right it’s probably petrol I was assuming it was diesel! I don’t know that much bikes. I appreciate the kind words and will be telling my partner people who have bikes are saying it should not be kept in the house!

Sorry if I seem a little naive, it’s just hard after the miscarriage I do worry! But it’s nice that people have reassured me and hopefully moving it out of the house will make me feel better. I will highlight to dp how important it is it’s not in the house!

I have a motorbike stored in our second Lou he. It’s absolutely fine.

Kids just don’t go in there.

Barely any different to people keeping a car, or bike, or lawnmower etc in an attached garage

BuildBuildings · 19/10/2019 19:41

Jesus people are so mean. Sorry about your miscarriage and congratulations on your pregnancy. Its understandable that you worry. I think it's probably fine re fumes. But it is a fire risk so it needs to go.

codenameduchess · 19/10/2019 19:43

How can you smell the petrol? It's in a sealed tank.

Yes there's a smell, oil and whatever, but it isn't going to harm you or the baby. You leave the house and carry on breathing air filled with pollutants.

I'd be getting outside for safety though, the risk of injury would be a bigger concern.

OdddSocks · 19/10/2019 19:44

I would also imagine that having the bike in the house would invalidate any insurance claim you may possibly need to make. Tell him that.

In fact, just try to insure your house with the bike in situ and see what they say....has he thought of that?

Any vehicle, whether their engine is running or not, will smell in an enclosed space - and it is not nice. I adore motor bikes - I have several - and they're stored a good distance from the house as I don't like the smell up close either.

Stand your ground OP. Look after yourself and that little wee one that's on the way. ((((
Congratulations)))))

ScabbyHorse · 19/10/2019 19:45

It's crap having it in the house anyway so tell him to sling it or put it outside. Bloody motorbikes it reminds me of the PJ Harvey song Mbike you should check it out.

Emmaemmaemmaemma · 19/10/2019 19:48

I’m so glad you’ve mentioned the insurance, I will tell him! I’d much rather not have it inside for the smell and for the fact I think our conservatory would look much nicer without a motorbike in it! Thank you for the kind replies and understanding it means a lot and you’ve made me feel better this evening Flowers
