Oh dear...this research shows that my baby is going to grow up with a penchant for cheese scones and mint chocloate!!

In the news today [[]news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6940852.stm]

I have a balance diet but then eat junk food on top of that so what does that mean for hairy baby and my current bump??

So far hairybaby (20 months) eats very well and healthily...hasnt discovered After Eights yet (i ate boxes of them in my last few weeks of pg)!!

Are cheeses scones junk food?? I keep telling myself they are a good source of calcium !!

Nah it's bollox! I ate crap when i was pg with DS and he's a tall, slim and lovely looking teenager!!

beansprout · 15/08/2007 11:45

Presumably this is why babies and young children aren't that interested in Brie, coffee and booze?

thehairybabysmum · 15/08/2007 11:46

excellent...exactly the reply i was hoping for (scurries off to vending machine!).

I assume im right about the calcium too!

It struck home with me. I had a wondrously healthy diet during pregnancy with lots of lovely fresh salads, fish, olive oil, everything homemade from scratch la-di-da - oh, and wagonloads of chocolate and cake - I just went mad for it.

DS is a brilliant eater, very non-picky, he will eat lots of fruit and veg, try new things and happily share all kinds of sophisticated adult food like curry, chilli, garlic, things with herbs in etc. But he is also obsessed with cake and chocolate Yet he has little interest in actual sweets, puddings or junk food.

RGPargy · 15/08/2007 12:00

Hairy - Gotta love all that calcium in those cheese scones.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 15/08/2007 12:07

In my first pregnancy after coming out of hyperemesis I could only eat junk food - I would literally vomit if I saw an orange juice advert on tv.
In my second pregnancy I conceived a totally obsessive aversion to anything with the slightest additive in it.

So we will see what happens with mine.

Cheese scones are v good for you, I'm sure.

thehairybabysmum · 15/08/2007 12:31

Hi Kathy. Do you think cheese scones from Bettys are even better...due to increased cost?? Mind you i have just discovered their childrens fat rascals...with chocolate and orange peel rather than currants and raisins...v. yummy. Im assuming the candied peel is a good source of Vit C!!

After reading that article I am intrigued. It says after animal tests, what animals did they manage to get to stuff themselves with crisps, choc, cakes and fizzy pop??!!

I have an image in my head of a load of pregnant chips at a junk food party!

My LO is going to be born a salami addict is that article is true he he

Cazzybaby · 15/08/2007 12:34

Ok just read it properly it says rats!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 15/08/2007 12:37

Well yes Hairy, but the danger is that if a penchant for junk food is passed on in the womb, a liking for expensive food may be as well (sounds like another research project is needed.... any volunteers?), so you may be producing a baby that will turn its nose up at the Spurriergate Centre and demand to be taken to Betty's all the time.

btw do you have any Sungold toms yet? I have lots on the plants but not ripe.

thehairybabysmum · 15/08/2007 13:01

just the take away bit of bettys though...and hairy baby never says no to the Spurriergate chocolate cake so hopefully he's not getting too exclusive in his old age!

I had 5 sungolds last week...only little ones but they tasted lovely...my plants are a bit straggly...in fact my entire allotment is a bit straggly at the mo...needs desperte attention this weekend (in fact im a bit straggly too..sick of being pregnant again already and ive still got a few weeks to go)!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 15/08/2007 13:02

I'm pretty impressed you're keeping an allotment going at all while this pregnant, tbh!

thehairybabysmum · 15/08/2007 13:17

ha ha...if you saw the actual state of our allotment currently impressed would not be the word that sprung to mind!!

My current role when we go down there is to entertain HB whilst DH does all the donkey work, so not really taxing myself.

Its full of weeds at the mo due to all the wet weather, then we have been DIYing for the last few weekends whilst it has been dry so it is a bit neglected. Still the potaoes are lovely!

I had the first of my potatoes for my dinner last night, sooo nice. Tomatos not ripe yet either.

I am going to ignore this pointless bit of research and have another go at the Green and Blacks.

RGPargy · 15/08/2007 13:49

I was cooking steak and jacket spuds last night for dinner. LO was bouncing around all over the place when i stuck the steak in the pan..... She's gonna love her MEAT!!! (her daddy's a veggie!)

LizzieO · 15/08/2007 14:03

you realise don't you that pretty soon there will be a new directive from Government, as well as completely abstaining from Alcohol (no more the odd glass once or twice a week) we will then be told not to eat any cakes, biscuits, choc or ice-cream,

Everything in moderation, and to be honest throughout early childhood the LO's can only eat what you choose to give them, or youhave in the house

I really craved choc in the first pregnancy (not really being a sweet tooth) but put that down to DS craving it rather than me

RGPargy · 15/08/2007 14:16

So true Lizzie. Remember the video of that poor kid in the US who was so obese she couldn't walk?? That HAS to be down to what the parents were feeding her, doesn't it?

thehairybabysmum · 15/08/2007 15:26

Blimey...that would have a good contraceptive effect i reckon the thought of no cakes, chocolate or biscuits during pregnancy!!
