Flu jab and whooping cough injection before or after flight?

Hi, I am currently pregnant and at the stage for flu jab/whooping cough. I was going to get them at my last appointment two weeks ago but I was on antibiotics so I wasn't allowed for obvious reasons.
I then couldn't have them as I had another bout of illness and apparently you have to be well.
I am now well and could get them tomorrow, however, I am flying (short haul flight) with my 2 year old one back to see my parents and wondering if I should wait until I'm back?
I remember last time my arm was so week after!
What would you do, get it before or after?

These haven’t been mentioned to me yet. I had my 28 week appointment Tuesday? When are you offered them? How far gone are you and how long are you away for?? I have had flu jab previously a couple of years ago and felt fine but I know others have felt awful after. X

When you get back, you won't have the benefit while travelling (depending on exact timings) so I personally wouldn't want to compromise existing immunity whilst going through an airport.

I mean that in the way that you shouldn't have them when ill, so I wouldn't if I was shortly going to be in a situation where I was more likely to get ill.

The actual flying and sore arm wouldn't bother me though.

WreathsAndRopes · 17/10/2019 08:17

Starlight you should have been reminded/discussed in that appointment normally, but it can vary. It's done via your GP not midwife though so you can just ring up for an appointment with the nurse saying how pregnant you are and get it booked in.

The sooner you get vaccinated against whooping cough especially the more antibodies you create and pass on via the placenta and if breastfeeding

Starlight84 · 17/10/2019 08:30

@WreathsAndRopes thank you. I think I’ll call the gp then and see what they say x

OP, it can take a couple of weeks for the flu innoculation to work. Ideally you should have it at least two weeks pre flight, and especially if you are going long haul to the Southern Hemisphere. Australia is having a particularly vicious flu season this year. Airports and planes are perfect breeding grounds for spreading respiratory infections, due to the crowding of people from all over the world, and the recycled air.

peamad · 17/10/2019 08:44

I had absolutely no side effects from either vaccine so I would say do it before you fly.

thisyeargoodyear · 17/10/2019 08:50

I would recommend at least getting the flu one now before you go. I found my arm sore for days after the whooping cough vaccine so you could get this one as soon as you come back if you don't want to risk having a sore arm. I had no side effects whatsoever from the flu vaccine.

I'd get them now. The whooping cough ones does hurt ur arm for a few days but only really when trying to sleep it can be sore on that wide. Flu one was a bit sore on the day but not next day.

I got whooping cough around 23wks and flu jab at 31wks.

Ah sorry for delay! Completely forgot I'd made the post until this morning. Blaming baby brain.
Went to the hospital and got my flu jab today. They had run out of the whooping cough one and the midwife seemed completely unconcerned and said to get it at my next appointment (which isn't until end of next month) not sure if that is right? Seems so lax...

@Starlight84 I was told about it at my 12 week (the whooping cough one) and then offered both at my 20 week appointment. Mine are given by the midwives at my antenatal appointments are the maternity ward. Not sure if it's different in different areas?
I'm East Midlands.

I'm 23 weeks, it's a short haul flight to Ireland. Only away for 5 days..

But paranoid about the whooping cough one now though. Maybe I'll call my gp

As long as you get the whooping cough jab by about 32 weeks, your baby will get full benefit. And it's still worth it later than that.

How many weeks will you be at next appointment?

scaevola · 18/10/2019 17:55

X-post

28 weeks is perfectly fine, which is why your MW is unconcerned

firstbabyloading · 18/10/2019 18:00

I had both vaccines done at the hospital last week i was 36 weeks, didn't hurt at all and I have had no symptoms.
