We are pretty set on a boy's first name: Hamish. We're Scottish and the name just feels right (you never know, we may change our minds when we meet them though!). Our last name begins with M. My husband really wants his father's name, which begins with A, as the middle name. I'm not keen on the initials reading HAM - especially as this features in the name itself. Be doesn't think it's an issue. What are people's thoughts on this? Is this weird or am I thinking too much? I can't ask anyone irl as we're not sharing the name with others beforehand.

I don't think it's an issue. Ham is hardly a rude word.

The prospect of getting teased for it growing up wouldn't worry me - there will always be something to tease (and initials are pretty weak material anyway) so I would find it easy to brush off.

DameSylvieKrin · 16/10/2019 13:14

Add an extra middle name if you are worried.

Boymummy3 · 16/10/2019 13:15

Honestly his initials will never actually be wrote down like that so I wouldn't say it's a problem at all. X

no problem. it's not rude

Cornishmum00 · 16/10/2019 13:21

Add another middle name, maybe from your side of the family, if you dont want just those initials

MockingJay27 · 16/10/2019 13:23

HAM is fine, I know a few BJs much worse Grin

Knittedfairies · 16/10/2019 13:27

I don't think it's an issue; those 3 letters form part of his first name anyway.

AriadneO · 16/10/2019 13:35

Not at all a problem. In fact, the amusement factor would make me do it all the more. I know a Peggy E-name, G-surname - PEG!

PS Hamish is a lovely name.

Dollywilde · 16/10/2019 13:38

Where I work people are known by their initials as shorthand but in all honesty HAM is fine. I've known a PMT and a COK in other offices so by comparison it's really nothing! As others have said if you're really concerned add a second middle name.

hiptobeasquare · 16/10/2019 13:40

My three year old is CF. He is also a right CF. :)

MyDcAreMarvel · 16/10/2019 13:41

I would add an extra middle name in case he is employed with a lot of Jewish/Muslim colleagues as an adult. He may then find his initials stressful.

AriadneO · 16/10/2019 13:51

mydc are you kidding? That's a crazy reason to add a middle name. I have some Jewish friends and I struggle to think of one who would tut at you for having ham as your initials

GaaaaarlicBread · 16/10/2019 13:57

I wouldn’t worry about it , it’s just initials . I’ve seen worse ! I have a friend of a friend who’s initials are Minger (surname inger) first name beginning with M. Took them ages to find a child’s name that they liked that didn’t spell finger , singer , etc

yellowmelon · 16/10/2019 14:07

These replies have really put my mind at ease - I was clearly overthinking this! DH will be delighted.

I know a JAM first name James. Only just realised Jam is also the first three letters of his name. He is my 11 yr old son!

Greyhound22 · 16/10/2019 14:32

No it's fine. I had to add an extra middle name otherwise DS would have been FOC but HAM is fine I doubt anyone would notice. I doubt anyone would have noticed FOC to be honest.

robarc · 16/10/2019 14:39

My son's spells out ARM. No biggie :)

DontCallMeDaisy · 16/10/2019 14:53

We wanted two middle names but dropped one as DD would have been ARSE - strangely it was a good while before we twigged what we were about to do to her. We just didn't think of spelling out the initials. HAM is fine, I actually think it's cool it spells out the first bit of his name.

TommyShelby · 16/10/2019 14:55

I know a Noah whose initials are NOAH. So tbh I don’t think many will notice HAM and Hamish ☺️

GaraMedouar · 16/10/2019 14:55

HAM is fine as initials. A girl in my class at school was HAM - she would tell us, but it was not anything to tease for. Many worse initials - go for it.

ShippingNews · 16/10/2019 14:56

My sister was MAP, and when she got married she became MAD. It's never bothered her , she makes a joke of it if anything.

Paddington68 · 16/10/2019 15:11

Can't see a problem unless you are Jewish

Dollywilde · 16/10/2019 19:28

@ShippingNews I was a LEAW who married to become a LEAP. Frankly I’m just grateful I didn’t marry into a K (or to a lesser extent F, N, D, etc.) Dm and Df clearly didn’t consider marriage when they named me (or maybe they thought I’d be more of a feminist and keep my name!!)
