My son has chicken pox

My son has just broken out in chicken pox and I'm 23 weeks pregnant. Any ideas where I stand? It isn't ideal for him to go and stay with family and when phoning the gp I couldn't get past the hitler receptionist

Have you had it before?

OlderthenYoungerNow · 15/10/2019 05:08

If you've had it before, then you'll be fine

ConstanzaAndSalieri · 15/10/2019 05:10

You’ll be fine. My son came down with it when I was about 38 weeks... I remember desperately hoping baby would wait enough before arriving (he did!).

Oat baths. Virasoothes. Sticker books and TV...

If you have had chicken pox you will be fine. I came into contact with someone with CP just before I found out I was pregnant and it was the first thing I asked the midwife when I called to book in.

I had two spots as a baby which was passed off as chicken pox but they wasn't too sure from what my mum can remember although my younger brother had it since then and I never caught it. Worlds worst timing 🤦🏻‍♀️😩

Unfortunately the old advice of “if you’ve had chickenpox you’re immune” is no longer true. People are losing immunity these days when they reach adulthood and they aren’t sure why.
I was told that I would be immune as I’d had chickenpox twice as a child - my immunity test showed that I was immune and then I still caught chickenpox for the third time while pregnant, confirmed by the virology lab. I’m under the consultant now, 20 weeks and not sure how it’s looking as brain and femur measurements are dropping in proportion to abdomen.
I don’t mean to panic you as to be honest, with chickenpox you are contagious 48 hours before the spots come out anyway so there isn’t much that can be done now if he’s already spotty.
I would demand the immunoglobulin ASAP and stick to your guns. I wish I had!!

Contact your midwife, it was going round my toddlers nursery when I was in early pregnancy and she arranged for my immunity to be tested, I didn't even need to do another sample as immunology had stored the rest of the one they use from booking in.

MrsB899 · 15/10/2019 08:04

I've just got off the phone to our private healthcare who have arranged for me to have the immunity test tomorrow and rush the results through. Fingers crossed

Your midwife should be able to add the test on to your booking bloods. Give her a call.

MildDrPepperAddiction · 15/10/2019 14:29

My son had chickenpox while I was pregnant with DD1. I'd had them as a child so I was fine. I know a woman who had shingles in her early pregnancy. Shes about 18 wks now and they have monitored her and all seems fine.

My 9 year old sister contracted chicken pox after I'd spend a week on holiday with her at 22 weeks - I called my GP and was advised that they could check my bloods from my booking appointment to see if I am immune. This was at 5pm and my doctor called me at 7:30pm to say that my bloods had bern tested and I was indeed immune. This was recent too, August this year. It could be worth a call.

FairyJuice · 15/10/2019 16:08

Glad you're having the test op, hopefully it will show that you are immune.

therewerefour · 15/10/2019 16:12

Pleased you've got a test arranged. My MIL had chicken pox when pregnant with my BIL and its affected his vision and hearing so please ensure you get the test ASAP.
