First clothes - to iron or not to iron?!

Due in a few weeks so finally starting to sort hospital bags and clothes for the baby. We've just got vests / babygros / blankets etc, the basics.

I've washed them all with non-bio and was told by a few people that you should iron everything to get rid of bacteria for a brand new baby?! I've googled but couldn't find an awful lot?! Not anything that definitely says you should or shouldn't anyway..

What is everyone else doing? It was ladies of an older generation than me that have been saying this so I'm wondering if that's something that was needed in the past maybe?!

Also, massive first world problem alert but we use ironing water (scented) which I would guess is not appropriate so if ironing every single item of clothing is needed I'll have to try and clean out the bloody iron to get rid of any traces of that first Hmm

I didnt iron any of my DS clothes.. still dont think I've ironed a single item of his and hes now 17 months!

People used to iron to soften clothes not to disinfect them. That’s not really needed any more as most baby clothes are already soft

Never iron baby clothes, they are too tiny and they tend to be made of stretchy cotton anyway so don't get wrinkled really.

You don't need to kill bacteria in clothing, washing them is fine.

Definitely no need to iron, besides they are far too small and fiddly to iron easily!

If you are worried about bacteria add some soda crystals or something to the wash, or use anti-bac rinse, like detox. Do remember though that it is better for your baby not to use anti-bac everything, as they need to have some exposure to build up their immune system.

I've never ironed a single item for my baby

Thanks all - exactly the answers I was hoping for (and common sense was telling me.. Grin)

Another example of other people and their opinions / advice driving me mad in pregnancy and making me doubt myself!!!

I iron everything. But only because I like it. It's not required.

Angelinthenightx · 14/10/2019 11:18

I iron everything thats just my way tho many people dont, its down to choice.

I’ve never ironed a single item of my daughters clothes 😂 I just don’t iron.. frankly I don’t have the time nor energy! I also stopped washing new clothes after 6 months .. by that point, she was putting everything in her mouth including crap off the floor so I stopped worrying about bacteria altogether (within reason obvs, I’m a clean person/household).

I remember carefully folding all babygrows and colour coordinating before she arrived.. haha! How life changes!

fruitinaheapisnotabirthdaycake · 14/10/2019 13:07

I have never ironed baby clothes. Your mate who told you to iron clothes is barking. As soon as baby takes his first breath he is exposed to bacteria . Honestly, you don't need to iron baby clothes

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 14/10/2019 14:14

Nope no ironing here either and DS is 2. I'm preg again and won't be doing any ironing. Far too fiddly, not just because I am lazy!

Grobagsforever · 14/10/2019 19:11

My children are 9 and 5 and I've never IRONED A SINGLE THING of theirs.

I see it as reducing our carbon foot print and also improving my quality of life. Ironing is a ridiculous act.
