Bleeding after private scan

Hi all,

I had a private scan yesterday at 7 weeks and all was fine, right position etc and we saw a heartbeat. This afternoon I've had some light bleeding which has now stopped, I spoke to the out of hours GP and they've suggested I rest and speak to my GP in the morning.

Does anyone know if the GP will refer me to be scanned again so soon? I've heard that they can sometimes be a little funny about scanning more than once in a week. I'm also worried that as it's already been confirmed it's not an ectopic they'll just tell me to wait and see what happens. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Was the scan internal or external?

Jellybott · 13/10/2019 19:26

It was external

I would imagine they may refer you for a scan to check the bleeding but it may be a few days before you can be seen

I’ve had a few occasions of spotting and heavy bleeding during my pregnancy, each time I have been referred for a scan at the early pregnancy unit.

It can depend on your early pregnancy unit. Some are more willing to scan than others. If you've had an ok scan and light bleeding (mine only really see quickly for heavy bleeding or pain) they may say no or not fit you in for a week etc

You might get lucky and get one that has more resources so is happy to see you ASAP. Might be worth calling your local one yourself. Mine doesn't need DR referral

Thanks for all the advice. The EPU where I am is referral only and doesn't have a public number, so I guess I just need to wait and see what my GP says. Feels easier said than done at the moment!

They may not scan you. I was scanned at 6 weeks due to bleeding and pain on one side. After that I had further bleeding but they wouldn’t rescan as they knew it wasn’t ectopic and there wasn’t anything they could do to stop a miscarriage - they would only see me if the bleeding got really heavy. In the end I paid for a private scan at nine weeks just for peace of mind.

Mintypea5 · 13/10/2019 19:55

@Jellybott it's not an easy wait. Try remember that you had a good scan. Sometimes the cervix can be irritated throughly some activities like sex?

I've bleed in early pregnancy with all mine. With DS1 I didn't realise I was pregnant until 12 weeks because I had what I assumed was my normal light periods! DS2 no exploration for it but happens a lot pre 12 weeks and then several times a week from 28ish weeks

Baby 3 due soon again bleeding in early pregnancy and occasional spotting on the 2nd tri. No explanation apparently it's just like that for some some people

You don't have to let them know you've had a private scan, especially if you think it might affect the care offered to you.

You don't have to let them know you've had a private scan, especially if you think it might affect the care offered to you.

But no care could prevent a miscarriage if that's what is happening and OP knows it's not ectopic, so if, knowing that, the GP wouldn't ordinarily refer for a scan, lying so that they do would be a waste of NHS resources. She should tell the GP the whole story so that they can make a medical decision based on the full picture.

OP don't tell them you had a private scan.

I bled heavily for an hour or two at 8 weeks and was convinced I was miscarrying. They scanned me a few days later and everything was fine. It's very common to bleed in early pregnancy and more often than not it's benign.
