Morning all,

Just been diagnosed with GD (I am 34+4 so pretty late!!).

Self monitoring and on medication. Growth scan shows baby way off the scale in size and weighing nearly 7lb already (I know these can be inaccurate).

I have an appointment next week about future plans - can anyone give me their experiences? Good or bad!! Were you induced early? Allowed to term? I am meant to be having an elective c-section, will they just do it early?

Thanks all Smile

Hi i have this im now 36wks mine is controlled by what i eat have to test myself 6x a day. I got told id be induced at 38wks if i dont go before then im in early stages of labour but keeps stopping, i dont think they would let u go full term. My baby was on the 90th line but now on the 50th at my scan this wk. at my 32wk scan she was. 4lbs 14onz.
Also ive lost a stone in weight due to having this i was a bit over weight so for me its made me be more healthy in pregnancy and my baby is fine so try not to worry having it,i was upset at the start when i found out but u get used to it.x

I was also diagnosed late. 36 weeks. I controlled it by diet alone.

They wanted to induce at 40 weeks. I had a sweep at 38+5 and baby arrived 39+1. She's just over a week old now.

They said she'd be big and she was just under 9lb, but I gave birth vaginally without forceps or anything. They did say I would not be able to birth her in water though and said I had to be on the labour ward.

After she was born my blood sugar was fine and she had it tested twice and she was fine.

Things will vary by hospital but I hope that's useful.

Very useful, thank you! I know the NHS is super busy but I am so anxious about it and just not getting told anything!

I had this many years ago - ds is now 21! He was 10lbs at birth and had to go to special care straight away as his bs was low. He looked huge in there with all the tiny prem.babies!

But he was fine, we came home from hospital 4 days later and he thrived.

I've had GD with both of my sons ( aged 3 & 6 months now) . I was diet controlled with my first and was induced at 40 weeks, 8lb 9. Was on insulin with second and was induced at 38 weeks 8lb. Have you joined Gestational diabetes UK on Facebook? This group was invaluable for me, everyone's in the same boat with the same questions and stresses. Good luck!

Oh I'll have a look on Facebook.now - I hadn't heard of that! Thank you!

Second the Facebook group - it's amazing. I signed up, totally worth it

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 12/10/2019 14:52

Yeh the Facebook group is great and really helped me. My ds was showing as huge on all the scans (97tb c) but all turned to be wildly inaccurate and he was 7.10 at birth. Stick closely to a low carb high protein diet and don’t worry too much if you end up having to go on metformin

DustyDoorframes · 12/10/2019 16:22

Yes yes to the Facebook group, and the website of resources that goes with it-
www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/

Most of it is free, but there are some paid-for recipes and menu plans which are really worthwhile too.
Exercise made a big difference to me-, I was diagnosed at the same stage as you, and didn't need medication in the end. The menu plans from that site and exercise kept me on track, I was lucky.

Another recommendation for the Facebook group.

I was induced at 40 weeks with my son and he was 9lb5. I wasn’t allowed to give birth in the water either as they were worried he would get stuck. They did say I could labour in there if I wanted too though. Turns out once they broke my waters he was in a hurry so no chance to get in the pool. I didn’t need forceps or anything so it was quite a straightforward birth really.

Good luck!x

I'm doing the GTT next week after another growth scan that shows him v big - almost 6 pounds at 32+6 and my amniotic fluid pretty high. But I had the glucose challenge test (just the drink without fasting) a couple of weeks ago and it came back fine? Is it possible for that to come back fine and for me to still have GD?

Sorry to piggyback on thread - I'll join the Facebook group if it turns out I have it!

Hope your appointment goes well OP!

I was diagnosed around the same time as you OP. Managed through diet for the first few weeks and was then medicated. DS was fine and my blood sugars were back to normal within 36 hours. I had an ES five days before my due date, but this had been booked prior to my diagnosis.

I ate well, lots of protein, low carb bread, olives, nuts, etc... I was shocked by the diagnosis at first, but was astonished by how quickly my energy levels improved once I followed a high protein / low carb diet.
