Cvs testing

I had my 12 week scan today and it came back with the fluid on the baby neck at 4.8, I had a harmony test 2 weeks ago and the fluid was much less - I have now decided to have a cvs where they take a sample from the placenta - has anyone had this? I am so worried now - any advice would be appreciated xx

I’ve had this done twice (I have a genetic chromosome condition I didn’t find out about until after I was pregnant). I’ll be honest - it’s not pleasant but don’t be scared.
The consultant scanned me first to check the baby was in the right place then gave me a local anaesthetic before inserting the needle (if you’re phobic, don’t look at this part). The staff were lovely and made a difficult situation much easier to deal with. Afterwards, I felt crampy and struggled to move about easily, so make sure someone can drive you there and look after you afterwards. Some hospitals recommend resting the next day, although I was ok by then. I hope your baby is healthy. Flowers

I had one a few years ago.

It was a bit painful when the needle went in, which I found worrying, but there were no issues as a result.

They do have a screen up showing the foetus (so as to aim correctly) so if you’d rather not see that, ask them to angle it away.

The worst bit was waiting for the result.

Best wishes

Hi,
I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant and had it done at 13 weeks due to the fluid at the back of baby’s neck being 3.8. My bloods also came back all over the shop with high hcg and low Papp-a. I felt like it was one of those situations like when u get on a rollercoaster. At the time your screaming and as soon as it’s finished your like it wasn’t that bad. Didn’t really hurt but I felt like it was a horrible sensation when the needle passes through into the womb. It was like the needle hits an empty space. Don’t want to scar you, just being honest. I would 100% have it done again. The relief when I got the phone call to say the results for downs, pataus and Edwards was clear was just unbelievable. Got that call within three days.

With me the second set of results they had found OTC. After further investigation it turned out my partner has it too. As he has no symptoms he must just be a carrier and so is she. It’s something that he will pass to all future children that are girls. She’s only been given a 5% change of presenting any symptoms. This could be delayed tho and could mean after certain meals when she’s in her 50s she could get head aches. Not worried about it at all. The genetic councillors have been fantastic and don’t think any further action is required. Just little one will need a blood and urine sample taken 24 hrs after birth.

Good Luck. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Xxx

Two CVSs and one amnio here, not in that order.
All three times were totally fine. Just take the day off work and take it nice and easy after the procedure. You might have some mild, minimal cramping, which is normal.
Though I had other children to look after, so the running around didn't quite stop. I had no physical complications other than the cramping, which was fairly unremarkable.
The complications for me was the diagnoses that came following two of the three procedures. Sad
I wish you well and hope your news is good! Flowers

With the cvs testing do they rescan you before hand? I am just concerned hat my harmony test came back at 1/10,000 and 99.99% fine and yet the NHS have found more fluid - I have spoke to family and they are saying how can I go in what the NHS have said when they are looking on a screen but the harmony is done on bloods - feeling confused and unsure now x

I'm so sorry this is happening to you.

I had a private cvs after fluid on the neck was found at the 12 week scan.

I didn't have any blood tests as the NHS said there was no point the fluid is a marker on its own for chromosome issues, the blood is irrelevant.

Anyway, the test physically wasn't that bad. And I'm really squeamish and a bit of a wimp. It was emotionally very hard. Baby was scanned again. I chose not to look. The Dr actually said the fluid had gone and the nose bone was normal so he would say very low chance of issue and he we wouldn't need to go ahead if we didn't want. We did for peace of mind.

It doesn't hurt and it's very quick, but as I said emotionally it's very hard. I took the rest of the week off work while we waited for the result as I was a mess. Unfortunately the fluid was a marker for a genetic syndrome that wasn't diagnosed until my ds was a year old. But he here and we managing.

Stay strong. Fluid on the neck doesn't always mean there is an issue. I think you have a 25% chance of a healthy baby.

Also I think the harmony is only looking at a handful of chromosome problems, where as the neck fluid could indicate a genetic syndrome or a physical or developmental problem, like heart or brain abnormalities.

So sorry to hear you’re going through this. I had a CVS in August after a NT of 4.9 at our 12 week scan. From my blood tests I was given a 1:50,000 chance of the baby having the 3 main chromosome issues so it was a hard decision whether to still go ahead with a CVS but I decided to do so in the end as I wanted to rule out everything that I possibly could. I found the procedure a bit unpleasant but if I was in the same situation I would have it again. I’m definitely not an expert but my understanding is that the CVS checks for potential issues that a harmony test can’t detect. Whatever you decide to do I wish you all the best, thinking of you x
