Positive test 5 weeks after miscarriage

Hi everyone, I had a surgical miscarriage 5 weeks ago today. I never tested to see if my HCG had gone down. I tested yesterday though and have now done three tests in last 24 hrs and all say positive (digital test says 1-2 weeks).

Could I still have HCG in me 5 weeks after miscarriage?

Hi OP, sorry for your loss Thanks depending on how far along you were if it was an early miscarriage your hcg levels can return back to normal within 12 days I had an early miscarriage (around 6 weeks) and I got negative tests 4 days after but a later pregnancy miscarriage it can take 4-6 weeks to return to normal but fingers crossed it's what you're hoping for x

@emmab96 thank you. I had surgery at about 8/9 weeks so not that far along - hopefully it's a real positive

I think it is more likely you are pregnant again. I don’t think HCG would still be detectable after so long. The same thing happened to me, apparently your fertility returns immediately after a miscarriage. Congratulations.

I've fallen pregnant soon after miscarriages - one of whom is my 11 year old DD now so hoping you've had the same fortune! My obstetrician was a miscarriage expert and she said it's common as she felt women were more fertile after mc

So sorry for your loss.

Sadly unless you have had a definite negative test since your MC it is entirely possible that the positive now is due to retained material rather than a fresh pregnancy. Obviously it would be wonderful if you are expecting again, but hormone levels don't go down until the womb is completely empty and it can be dangerous for your health if you don't get it checked out. I would not recommend waiting. You need an ultrasound (probably one of those unpleasant internal ones) as the only way to establish whether there is a new pregnancy or whether the hormones are telling you that the MC is still not complete. Get in touch with the clinic which did the MC surgery and ask for a referral for a scan.
