November baby - what to sleep in?

So I'm due November 30th, we have a Moses basket ready, plenty of cellular blankets, long sleeved sleep suits etc but I'm still unsure of what to have her sleep in/with?! There's so many options from swaddling to sleeping bags etc. What's everyone's experience with newborns in winter & keeping warm at night?

I've bought a gro egg to tell me room temperature and some groswaddles which tell you on the packets what to dress them in and what temperature

I have a November baby and she slept in a short sleeved vest (I hate long sleeved ones) a babygro and I had her in a swaddle wrap thingy as she absolutely loved being swaddled. My current six month old never liked swaddles and I layer cellular or knitted blankets over her. Every house is different when I had my little boy we were in an older house with no proper insulation so obviously extra blankets were needed. The gro egg is great. You will actually find that you need less blankets during the winter as the heat will probably be on all the time.

Thanks for posting this question @Andersonx3. Ive been wondering the same thing. I keep reading conflicting things about what is safe to have around them when they are sleeping, i thought anything loose like a blanket wasnt advised but i have no experience so not sure Confused

I have been using a swaddle me for my DS who is 3 months. Admittedly he was born in July and it was so hot I worried about him over heating. Now it's getting colder I worry about him overheating with too many layers 🤪.
I am going to put him in his 2.5 tog gro bag with a baby grow and a vest underneath.
I have a gro egg which I find helps me to decide what I will put him in at night.

Use this as a guide based on room temp

Ooh lots of different ideas. I'm currently leaning toward short sleeve vest, sleep suit and layered cellular blankets but that may be because that's what I have ready! It's so confusing!

I had DS in the winter and we used a vest, sleepsuit and cellular blanket (below the shoulders, tucked in appropriately etc, the hospital showed us safe sleeping stuff). They can have sleep bags when their heads are big enough that they can't wiggle through the neck hole; and they're fab, but won't be for at least 12 weeks I wouldnt have thought.

PrayingandHoping · 07/10/2019 20:40

@Tippety Gro company sell grosnugs that are suitable from birth.

0lapislazuli · 07/10/2019 21:17

A vest, babygrow and sleeping bag (grobag or grosnug for newborns). Sleeping bags are easier than blankets. Check the temperature guidance for grobags and also check the baby’s chest or neck to see if they’re too hot or cold.

moreismore · 07/10/2019 21:24

If you live somewhere that gets chilly then you can’t beat a sleeping bag for keeping them really toasty. Helps keep them asleep for transfers too as you’re never putting them onto a cold sheet. Disadvantage is if you end up co sleeping some of the time they’ll prob get too hot.

LeahSMS · 07/10/2019 22:06

I used a vest, baby grow & sleeping bag it just made me feel better knowing there was no loose blankets in with baby but I’m a worrier

bananallamas · 07/10/2019 22:50

Cellular blankets are a PITA. Every time you pick baby up and it back down you have to do the tucking in etc all over again. I also got a bit obsessive about making sure they weren't loose so every time she moved about and kicked a bit I would be tucking her back in again.

0-6m grobags can be used from 8lb up so many babies can have these from birth or within a few weeks after birth. They are so much easier. And until then get a grosnug or groswaddle!

PrayingandHoping · 08/10/2019 08:12

@bananallamas grosnugs can be used from 5lbs 👍

Tippety · 08/10/2019 08:21

@PrayingandHoping ah okay, I'd go for one of those then!

Horehound · 08/10/2019 08:38

I think the grosnug and groswaddles are completely overrated.

My baby is 6 weeks old and I've found using vest, baby grow and blanket easiest.
And he mostly sleeps in with me so just under duvet. He has good head control and is strong so I'm not worried.

Fortheloveofscience · 08/10/2019 08:41

In the 10 days since having my DD I’ve bought 5 grosnugs Blush. Cellular blankets fine for during the day but overnight are a PITA because tucking them in woke her up, and swaddles were too fiddly and came unraveled as soon as she wriggled.

ManoloChooBoutin · 08/10/2019 10:03

I think you're right for early weeks - bodysuit, sleepsuit and cellular blankets. Google for how many (convert into a tog rating) for the temp in the room. Blankets are fine when they're so little as they don't tend to move around too much. Just make sure properly tucked in at the foot and sides of the cot, and tuck them under your baby's arms.

I found that once mine got a bit older they would kick the blankets off or wake when I was tucking them in. So they then moved onto sleeping bags. Probably 2.5 tog plus the clothes above (or more / less depending on room temp).
