Hip pain during the night - any tips

I am currently 25+3 and suffering from bad hip pain at night. It is usually the opposite hip to the one I am laying on. It burns and wakes me up multiple times a night so I end up tossing and turning all night. I have one of those giant pillows but that's obviously not helping.

Any suggestions?

The only thing I could suggest is sleeping with a pillow between your knees, that’s the only thing that helps me.

Could it be pelvic girdle pain?

Go to the physio sooner rather than later. For now, use a pillow between your knees.

Yes definitely sleep with a pillow between your knees/legs. I’ve been doing it this time round since around 20 weeks. I still wake up a little stiff sometimes but it’s definitely better. Do you have a pillow or support under your bump area as well? I find this helps too as relieves the strain a bit

I started with this when I was around 20 weeks that's gradually got worse. I'm almost 32 and have physio in a couple of weeks as i have SPD! Speak to your midwife sooner ratger than later, i've found a pillow inbetween my knees and then one by my ankles helps slightly better

I found a single duvet under the sheet gave a bit of extra padding, which helped a lot. And saved the mattress when my waters went!

Yeah I have a long pillow that I sleep with between my knees but still wake up with pain maybe 5/6 times a night. I'm pretty tired! Made worse by the fact as soon as I wake I then need a wee!

The pillow needs to be between your legs from your knees to ankles to keep your legs straight. Depending on how thick your pillow is you may need two. Also a small pillow or rolled up towel under your bump to stop you twisting forward.

I've been sleeping like this with a duvet folded under my sheet to cushion lower hip and with my body pillow tucked in behind my back so I'm tilted slightly backwards rather than forwards with my legs straight if that makes sense... It's a pain when you do wake up and need the loo to deal with all the pillows! I also went through a stage of sleeping propped up.

The physio I saw recommended spending the last hour before bed sat on a ball rotating hips with heat on back and ice on front of pelvis and taking paracetamol.

Brilliant tips thank you very much. I remember having pains with DS1 but it was right at the end near mat leave so I just gritted teeth because I could rest in the day. Now I have a toddler waking me up at dawn and work for another 10 weeks or so I am not sure I can put up with it. I will try making sure I am more propped up

Are you taking a high enough vitamin d supplement? My hip pain disappeared when I increased my intake.

I used a tennis ball to massage my hip which helped - you lie on the bed on top of it with your hip and roll gently on it to move it around and massage. I also found using a support belt during the day helped with soreness at night.
