C-section pain relief

Hi guys

I had my c-section last night, baby Andrew was born a whopping 10lb 1oz

I have to say I'm in absolute agony, I've tried to stay on my feet as much as possible but finding it incredibly difficult.

I'm about to be discharged, they've administered a suppository of diplofenac and told me to take paracetamol and nurofen.

Any ideas how to cope with the pain? I got incredibly emotional today, like I couldn't cope and I'm terrified this will happen when I get home

What got you through? How long was your recovery

If you’ve not been discharged ask to be given a better pain management prescription dihyrdocodeine much better alongside regular paracetamol 8 ibrophrem

Gettingonabitnow · 04/10/2019 19:53

Sorry to hear this. I’m considering having an elective so keen to track this thread x

SheRaTheAllPowerful · 04/10/2019 19:53

*excuse typos there

Celebelly · 04/10/2019 19:54

If you can't handle the pain when discharged then you can ask to be readmitted so you can get something stronger. I wasn't in much pain myself so didn't but I believe there were other women on the ward who were still in because they were on morphine.

Make sure you take your medication exactly at the right times and don't miss a dose, even if you start feeling a bit less sore.

SheRaTheAllPowerful · 04/10/2019 19:55

I had to keep asking I was in so much pain. They would never leave a man after a major operation like this with shitty take some paracetamol:(
I had morphine and it didn’t even touch the sides.

helly29 · 04/10/2019 19:56

Hi,
You're at the worst point of it, it's sore but will begin to get better

My tips:

  • move slowly and carefully
  • put cushions underneath you so you are more raised up when sitting down/standing up
  • a grabber for things out of reach (I found twisting worst)
  • remember to take the painkillers regularly, I staggered mine so I was taking something every 2 hrs
  • hold a cushion against the wound when coughing or standing

Second time round I was discharged with some liquid morphine, it did help but I managed first time without it. I'd speak to your gp if you're struggling, or the doctors at the hospital if you're still there.

Congratulations! Hope you feel better soon

missnevermind · 04/10/2019 20:03

I can't believe they are discharging you 24 hours after a major operation.

Iamnotaroboteither · 04/10/2019 20:03

If you've not yet been discharged, you should try and stay until the pain is under control. I don't think they should be discharging you when you're feeling like this. I've had 4 c sections and the third one left me in terrible pain both from the operation and the after contractions. The only thing that helped was a double dose of morphine which they would only give me once. I stayed in three nights because of it. It will get better but you have to be able to manage it to go home and be able to look after your baby. I really do sympathise, you obviously need to do as little as possible. I hope you have lots of help.

Iamnotaroboteither · 04/10/2019 20:04

Oh and huge congratulations, sorry!!!

Nat6999 · 04/10/2019 20:06

I was on iv morphine for 48 hours, then diclofenac & co codamol 30/500 4 times a day, they sent me home with 2 weeks supply

Ginmonkey84 · 04/10/2019 20:12

Yes I also go 30/500 co-codemol home with me and nearly 14days supply. Ask for it, it really does help x

Billballbaggins · 04/10/2019 20:15

I got discharged approx 40hr after mine with normal paracetamol and ibuprofen. My DH had strong co-left from an injury so I took that instead for a few days. Make sure you tell the midwives you want better pain relief. Its fucking barbaric to discharge women less than 48hrs after major surgery to look after a newborn baby with shit fucking pain relief

Expressedways · 04/10/2019 20:16

Congratulations! I was given diclofenac tablets and paracetamol in hospital and was sent home with a 4 week supply, although I didn’t need it for that long. I was also prescribed oral morphine in hospital but never took it as I didn’t need it. Definitely ask for something stronger and tell them you’re in pain. I also stayed 3 nights for an elective with no complications, 24 hours is so soon to be discharged!

Billballbaggins · 04/10/2019 20:19

Sorry I also forgot to add my congratulations!

Cegbee · 04/10/2019 20:20

You can't take codeine or co-Codamol if you're breast feeding but you can have dihydrocodeine or oral morphine (oramorph/sevredol). If you're in agony that you won't be able to cope with at home you either need to delay your discharge and have something stronger there or ask for them to give you something stronger (as above) to take home. The long-acting pain relief in the spinal injection wears off after 24 hours and that combined with mobilising means pain often gets a lot worse at that point. If you're desperate to go home you could go and see your GP in the next few days but you need to be able to get there in pain etc. Good luck.

Sunshinegirl82 · 04/10/2019 20:26

Tell them you need better pain relief! I've had two sections and standard pain relief schedule is paracetamol and diclofenac with oramorph if needed. I can't take diclofenac fo had ibuprofen instead.

I had one or two doses of morphine in hospital. I would absolutely have asked to stay in if the pain wasn't manageable.

Definitely don't suffer, good luck and congratulations!

ShowOfHands · 04/10/2019 20:30

I was discharged 12hrs after my first without pain relief though I was lucky not to need it!

Keep asking and firmly stating that you are in pain. Have you seen the physio?

Fatted · 04/10/2019 20:33

Congratulations!

Demand to stay in the hospital. Keep telling them how much pain you are in.

24 hours post c-section I was still on tramadol. I was offered to go home after 48 hours and I refused because I still needed tramadol.

bonzo77 · 04/10/2019 20:41

Congratulations. The pain is probably about as bad as it’s going to be right now. The best advice I had was to keep moving, slowly. And to try very hard to stand up straight not hunched. Your hormones are going to make you teary, and feel like you can’t cope. You almost certainly can.

I’ve had 3 sections, after my first two I had one dose of oramorph the first morning after and then was discharged on paracetamol and ibuprofen. The third I didn’t have the oramorph. After the first I was sent home with dihydrocodeine, but that was 9.5 years ago and the packet is still only missing 5 tablets so I can’t have taken many! I do remember being in quite a bit of pain after my first, but it really settled pretty fast, I remember walking to the shops with the buggy within a few days. Somehow those early days are such a fog of tiredness and change and hormones and soreness and elation. It’s often hard to work out what’s making you feel so off.

cultkid · 04/10/2019 20:48

Oramorph / tramadol to go home with
Also laxatives
I think you'll be happier at home with revved up pain relief

Tini17 · 05/10/2019 07:18

How are you OP?
Have they managed to sort your pain relief out? Hope things are easing off in any case.

Congratulations!
