Want a baby but anxiety overwhelming me

Hi everyone,

I'm feeling quite conflicted at the moment. I would really like to have a baby. I love children and can totally imagine myself being a mum. However, last year I found out I had a chronic bowel condition which I have been trying to get under control for the last year and it has been really hard, both physically and emotionally.
I'm scared I couldn't cope with pregnancy especially if my condition flared up and I suffer with quite severe anxiety anyway meaning I worry about everything that could go wrong etc.

I'm just wondering if anyone had any advice or has been through pregnancy whilst having a chronic illness?

Thank you :)

If your condition is an autoimmune one then yes, it’s a good idea to get it under control first and also seek specialist fertility advice as you might need progesterone/ steroids / other immunotherapy treatments to sustain the pregnancy in the early days.

Thanks. Yes it is autoimmune. I am already on immunosuppressant treatment.

Women often cope with chronic illness during pregnancy.

Sometimes things actually improve during pregnancy.

It sounds as though some work around your anxiety would be really useful for you before you make a decision about pregnancy?

There are lots of therapies you could explore to find the best fit for you.

I wish you well OP, and I’m sure that you too can cope with your chronic bowel condition if you do decide to try to become a mum.

Do speak to your consultant. I know I mustn’t fall pregnant whilst on the particular immunosuppressant I’m on. Are you seeking treatment for the anxiety?

Thank you. Yes I've tried lots of therapy before. Had cbt but hasn't helped and also loads of counselling in the past. I'm not sure what else to try.

Sometimes you just need to do now and think later otherwise you'll wheel yourself up too much about all the unknowns.

But do talk to your consultant/specialist so you have as much information and know what to expect.
