Has anybody regretted getting one done, I’m about 7 weeks pregnant, this is my first pregnancy and I keep worrying something will go wrong and I’m wondering if getting a scan will put my mind a little at rest or if I’m wasting money? My first nhs scan is in 5 weeks

I got one done at 6ish weeks and it put my mind at rest. Saw a heartbeat etc. Im pleased I did

20TinkerBell20 · 03/10/2019 10:45

We got one too. Lucky we did because midwife forgot to book the 12 weeks scan so didn’t have it until 13 weeks.... luckily they had a cancellation. But not sure I could have waited any longer. Now looking at booking a gender scan for around 17/18 weeks as I’m not sure I can wait until the 20 week nhs scan. I think once I have a bump and can feel movement I will be less worried.

Teddybear45 · 03/10/2019 11:02

IVF baby so had to have one at 7 weeks to be released into NHS care. I think they are worth their weight in gold - if you use a reputed provider that only uses experienced hospital sonographers (eg Ultrasound direct) they will be able to measure sizs / position / check if there’s anything like a clot that could harm the baby, and scan your ovaries to make sure it’s not an ectopic.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 03/10/2019 11:06

Going against the grain, I have several friends who have had early “reassurance” scans only to then have heartbreaking news at the 12-week dating scan, or sadly lose the baby in between. I just waited until 12 weeks each time.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 03/10/2019 11:08

Also - scans generally don’t put my mind at rest for more than about 24 hours. I just go back to worrying because that is what happens in pregnancy and parenthood generally. It’s lovely to have the scans, but given that one can’t have one daily I just had to find a way to live with the worry

MindyStClaire · 03/10/2019 11:30

I had an 8 week private scan on DD that showed all was fine, hugely reassurance.

I had a 9 week private scan on second pregnancy that showed no heartbeat and that the baby had stopped developing at 8 weeks. Referred that day to NHS, surgical management a few days later meaning I could go on holiday with a line drawn under the physical side of things.

Both scans hugely valuable in their different ways and I'm very glad to have done both.

ruralcat · 03/10/2019 11:32

I have had to have early scans done on the nhs and whilst reassuring at the time it really is only short lived and you do go back to worrying. Having said that it is good to know that the pregnancy has progressed well up to the point of the scan and I believe that if a heartbeat is seen at 8 weeks the chances of the pregnancy progressing well are high.

Jent13c · 03/10/2019 11:40

I had one for each baby. Both showed a haematoma which is just a collection of blood where the placenta begins to form. The first I had a massive bleed at 10 weeks but baby was totally fine. The second I didnt bleed at all but because of the last one and having seen the haematoma again I was constantly constantly on edge waiting for it to happen. That being said I would probably have early scans if I had any further kids. I don't really get much symptoms in 1st trimester so panic the whole way through

Cazzy198 · 03/10/2019 11:48

I lost my first pregnancy to a delayed misscarriage and only found out a day before my 12 week scan due to heavy bleeding. A scan showed my child had stopped developing at 5 weeks.

This time round I booked an early scan and I'm happy I did because it put my mind at rest to see 7 week baby with a heartbeat.

I personally felt that if my baby stopped developing, I wanted to know as soon as possible as I couldn't deal with finding out at 12 weeks again. I had just told my family the first time round and got myself super excited so the news devastated me.

You have to do what's right for you though. I only got an early scan because of my previous miscarriage

Charm23 · 03/10/2019 11:53

We had a viability scan at 7+5 but it was on the NHS due to a previous MC. It was lovely and did help us relax but that feeling doesn't last as long as you'd like. We then had our NHS dating scan at 13 weeks. Couldn't wait until 20 weeks for the next scan so we booked a private gender scan at 17+3. I'm now 23 weeks and my next NHS scan isn't due until the end of the pregnancy so we have booked another private scan at 27+3. Can't wait to see our little girl again 😍

Rotorua · 03/10/2019 11:56

I had one at 11 weeks. Mostly because in my area they were really slow with booking me in for any appointments and by 11 weeks I still wasn't booked in for the 12 week scan.
Best 100 pounds I have spent. Got reassurance and could wait till my NHS scan in a much calmer way than before the scan

Jollitwiglet · 03/10/2019 12:51

Not regretted it as such but I only felt reassured for the duration of the scan. This is the first pregnancy I've paid privately for a scan. My pregnancy before ended in miscarriage 5 days after an early scan with the NHS showed a baby with a heartbeat.

sep30 · 03/10/2019 12:53

It put my mind at rest for a few weeks after having it, so glad I did it, we had it at 9 weeks! I think we worry about every scan to be honest be it the 12 or 20 week scan so if it helps you for a few weeks I say go for it!

bee222 · 03/10/2019 14:40

Personally I wouldn't. I had one at 10 weeks due to anxiety from a previous missed miscarriage. I found out that I had yet another MM and the scan clinic were woefully incompetent and under trained on how to deliver bad news. At one point a member of staff had to tell the sonographer to stop projecting the image of my empty sac on a big screen in front of me. They then badgered me for ages afterwards for a review and asked if i wanted a copy of the scan photos. A lot of these clinics are essentially vanity services to sell you tat (baby reveal bollocks) and are not equipped to deal with anything other than the most basic care. This was with Baby Bond

DryShampooholic · 03/10/2019 15:42

Thanks for all your messages, I’ve gone ahead and booked it, I know an early scan is not an indicator of a healthy pregnancy, but by my calculations I’ll be over 12 weeks when I have the nhs scan and I just can’t wait until then.

I had one and I regretted it because she made me more worried by saying 'it's very very early' 'anything could happen' and she put my conception date back by a week which I thought was impossible. All of this cost me £90! I spent the next 7 weeks agonising. I'm now 34 weeks but I still wish I hadn't bothered.

MindyStClaire · 03/10/2019 20:36

That's awful bee222. My missed miscarriage was diagnosed at baby bond and they couldn't have been lovelier. We were treated so kindly by them. I'm so sorry you didn't have the same respect shown.

Bol87 · 03/10/2019 20:57

I had one this time at 9 weeks mostly as a bit of a pick me up during a HG pregnancy. I’d been so ill, I just couldn’t bear the thought of getting to 12 with all the suffering & something being wrong! I know not guaranteed of course but I’m not an overly anxious person so it put my mind to rest enough that all sickness was for a so far viable pregnancy!

Im lucky I have clinic in the village I live in, it’s a very small chain. They have 3 dotted around Yorkshire. Their prices are so much cheaper then I read online. The early scan was £35. I had a 4D gender & well-being one today for £45. And they are so lovely. I’ve used them last pregnancy too & can’t fault them.

TtcanotherG · 05/10/2019 22:47

I regret it. I had one done 2nd Oct and all it's done is cause me anxiety. She told me I was a week behind my dates. I know my dates as I've been tracking ovulation as this one first cycle off the pill. I did see heartbeat which I'm thankful for but now my worry is baby not growing as it should be. Got to go back 2weeks to be rescanned.

Wolfiefan · 05/10/2019 22:50

I wouldn’t. Because it wouldn’t reassure me for longer than a few hours.

Kanga83 · 05/10/2019 22:59

I had three private scans and glad I did. One at 6 weeks when found out pregnant straight after surgery for endo, 11 and 25 weeks.
