Ventriculomegaly

Hello, NC for this as I’m a sporadic poster.

Last week we had an additional scan at 26 weeks as I’m on sertraline - it was a check to make sure baby is growing properly. At the scan they picked up very mild ventriculomegaly - measurement of 11.1mm bilaterally. They arranged a detailed ultrasound at the local specialist hospital and said we'd take it from there.

Today (27 weeks) we had the detailed scan and the VM has increased to 12mm. As there was no sign of it on the 20 week scan, I'm now getting quite worried that it is progressing - it is already "moderate" rather than "mild" ventriculomegaly.

We have been referred for an MRI and will have that within the next fortnight.

Obviously someone on sertraline is going to be a bit of a worrier, but I’m doing my very best. I am not infected with anything, which is good, and there were no other physical abnormalities on the ultrasounds, which is also good. I’m assuming they will be checking the corpus callosum at the MRI. We refused amnio because of the risks of premature labour.

Can anyone give me any further reassurance, please? I’m worrying like crazy about hydrocephalus or Down's (less so the latter as my other tests have come back as low risk and the consultant has indicated she isn’t too concerned about this as a possibility). Most of all I want my little boy to be happy and healthy, and I just don’t know what the future looks like if the VM progresses further. I’ve been reading loads (sensible sources only!) but it all seems so uncertain atm.

Long post but needed to vent. Thanks for reading.

I've had a recent scan that also shows mild ventriculomegaly - have they offered you any follow up appointments or scans?

I had this exact thing! My lb was at 12mm on one side and 12.4 on the other so odd as well. MRI went ok. Just confirmed exactly what the specialist thought. Decided against the amnio. we had scans every bloody week the while way through. They really freaked us out. Born 5 days early (by their count not mine) and he just had a massive head... Literally nothing wrong with him. He's a normal (ISH) 3yr old boy now. Alot of worrying over nothing. I know this isn't always the outcome but seriously don't worry too much. You didn't cause this and there's nothing you can do to change it. He had his head measured by a specialist every week for 6 months and then they discharged him. He is so normal it's almost boring.

@elf1985 that's good to know. Did the measurements go down with time?

elf1985 · 03/01/2020 17:38

Nope stayed exactly the same. Even when measured after birth. I think they scare you during this because they need to prepare you for the worst, which could be awful. But around 6 months my specialist said that he doubted there would be any problems as other than those measurements there was no other signs of any problems. Ask to see the MRI, I didn't and always wished I had. Good luck xx

Thanks @elf1985 Smile

Just to allay fears about hydrocephalus, my DD has it (wasn't picked up on scans, so we only found out when she got very poorly at age 7). She is now a wonderful mummy to my DGS1 and DGS2 is due next month x

It doesn't always mean doom & gloom x
