I'm seriously confused..my partner forgot to wash them before he peeled them but thoroughly did after peeling. however I have seen some websites saying you're supposed to do it before and after and now of course my pregnant mind is worrying that there might be an issue with them. they're being boiled as we speak and then mashed so is there really any chance there could be nasties still on them!? so confused. thanks all! x

😂

tweedledeedo · 01/10/2019 18:25

What?! No, they're absolutely fine!

BootLocker · 01/10/2019 18:25

None at all. Chill man . Tatties are safe .

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 01/10/2019 18:27

Huh? I don't think it matters...

You will be fine OP

Teddybear45 · 01/10/2019 18:27

You need to remove the soil so wash and scrub before peeling. I have never washed after.

Hopex3 · 01/10/2019 18:35

ahh it's just because I've seen all these websites (admittedly mostly American) about the importance of washing them before peeling as you can transfer the germs onto the inside potato but surely if they get washed after the shite is washed off too so it doesnt really matter either way!? ah dear the paranoid pregnant mind strikes again 😂🙈

You’re going to cook them which will kill the germs.

Teddybear45 · 01/10/2019 18:38

listeria is far more common in America which is why their advice is often so OTT.

Horehound · 01/10/2019 18:41

I think you need to chill out and don't take every single piece of advice as absolute.
Like Paté is a no no but if you ate a bit you'd be fine and so would the baby. Duff like that. Chilllll

Hopex3 · 01/10/2019 18:42

yeah I just didnt understand the emphasis on washing beforehand - I would have thought washing after was just as beneficial as even if you did get any of the potential 'nasties' from the outside onto the inside, washing after would get rid of it just the same Confused just didnt understand the logic behind what I was reading Haha!

I don't wash if I'm peeling and I'm still here 😬

Hopex3 · 01/10/2019 18:55

yeah I've been quite paranoid during this pregnancy but even I cant quite understand why it's so important to wash them before peeling as opposed to washing after and then them being boiled to buggery. I can't imagine listeria/toxo surviving in that circumstance Hmm

If the potatoe is showing any green, these parts should be cut out as they can cause solanine poisoning.

Valkarie · 01/10/2019 19:08

I have never washed a supermarket potato. Only the ones I grew that were proper muddy. Not dead yet

Hopex3 · 01/10/2019 19:08

oh definitely nothing like that on them, were only brought today no marks on them whatsoever. I definitley would notice stuff like that I'm already super paranoid 😂

Never washed a potato in my life. Both me and my children are alive

Hopex3 · 01/10/2019 19:36

yeah I mean it's not even like they've not been washed, I just wasnt understanding the relevance of washing them before as opposed to after Confused the things you find on Google I keep telling myself to stay off it then I go do it again!

In the olden days, when you bought potatoes from the green grocer, there was a fair bit of dried mud on them so they had to be washed before peeling. Nowadays they only need cooking. I assume you aren't eating them raw!

lljkk · 01/10/2019 19:59

I have a feeling OP's idea of 'washing' is not like mine.

I rinse the extra dirt off after peeling. Yes I can't figure out how to peel without having a slightly dirty spud afterwards. Is all. We eat spuds 4 nights a week including thru 4 pregnancies. I can't see a problem has happened yet.
