Cyclogest during pregnancy

Hi,

I'm currently week 20. I've had 2 silent miscarriages before and with this pregnancy the gynecologist told me to take cyclogest until week 20. I'm not really sure what /how cyclogest helps, but the doctor said that it's not needed beyond this point as the baby's placenta is developed and takes over.

I feel a bit anxious about coming off it, because everything is going well so far, but I also don't want to pointlessly put stuff into my body when it's not needed.

Just curious to know at what week other pregnant ladies have come off cyclogest?

Hey !

I was on cyclogest. In some countries every pregnant woman gets given it- just as a preventative measure. I was having my HCG and Progesterone levels checked during early pregnancy and one of my blood tests showed that the progesterone had dropped a little. The doctor said it's not a cause for concern but that I could take cyclogest to rest assured I keep my levels high. So I did.

I started taking it from around week 5 I think, up until week 12-13. I was also nervous about stopping it, but nothing happened at all. If the doc has told you you can stop, I'm sure all is going to be fine. The placenta takes over from 12 weeks or so, I was also anxious, so I understand. But all should be well- and if you do get spotting, just go straight back to your doc.

All the best to you !

I had cyclogest since I was 12 weeks pregnant till the end of my pregnancy which was 35 weeks. Reason being, I was carrying twins and my cervix was very very short. I do think cyclogest somehow helped but I suppose everyone will have different reactions

Thank you @mummytobe2020

How far along are you now? Good luck to you too!

This was in 2017. I honestly felt like the cyclogest helped my cervix somehow because my cervix was so short from 20 weeks and I made it to 35. My twin girls were born last year Feb and now they are turning 2 soon

Thanks @Skysha

I believe cyclogest is used during pregnancy for different reasons and therefore for different amounts of time. I'm not quite sure why it was given to me because my 2 previous miscarriages were not investigated and I haven't had any examinations either (I was told generally treatment and investigation only happens if you've had 3 or more consecutive miscarriages)...but I guess I was lucky that the gynecologist recommended it to me, as everything seems to be good so far.

Gynecologist just wrote it on my discharge note that with next pregnancy he recommends taking it.

I tried to call him but unfortunately he's left the practice, but his secretary said it's taken to strengthen the womb...(I think during early pregnancy) which is why they told me to stop taking it after week 20.

I've had my 12 and 20 week scan, and no-one said anything about my cervix being too short or anything, so I assume that part is all good and therefore I wasn't given cyclogest for that reason.

If there is anyone else out there who may have a similar story, would be really helpful to hear when you came off cyclogest.

@AR23 I'm 23 weeks now. There were literally no problems at all stopping the cyclogest. I was on the suppositories, so it was just really nice not to have to insert them in the morning and at night. It was also lovely not having to deal with the mess they make. With makes me feel sick thinking about it! You'll be fine ! All the best to you again !

@mummytobe2020

Aww thank you for the encouragement. Yes I'm on the pessaries twice a day too (400mg morning and evening) and hate the mess created by it.

No problem ! I think it's very very unlikely something will go wrong. It's even more unlikely that it will just immediately go wrong without warning. But I remember the anxiety surrounding it. All will be well Smile
