Cloth nappy starter kit recommendations?

Hi everyone

I've been looking into reusable nappies but I'm a bit at a loss as to where to start.

This is my first baby so I've not got much experience with changing nappies - what I've read seems more complicated than disposables but not too much to get used to.

I'm looking to purchase a starter kit that contains everything I need - does anyone recommend any at all?

FYI - I'd rather get the flushable inserts than be washing them as well as the nappies.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Try second hand - you won't know which brand suits your DC until you give a few a try.

Flushable liners shouldn't be flushed either fyi - can be binned though!

When my youngest was born nearly 7 years ago we borrowed a bucket of different brands of nappies from a nappy library. If you Google nappy library in your area it should give you some options. Having a selection to try meant we could find the best brand for us without spending a lot of money on nappies we didn't know if we'd like. Our favourites in the end were Tots Bots but friends of mine preferred Babino Mios and hemp ones.

You need www.thenappylady.co.uk/ She offers great advice and good value trial kits. We love our cloth nappies and dont find it difficult or time consuming.

Probablyshouldbecleaning · 01/10/2019 14:50

Where abouts are you? Our local council has a scheme that will give you a free kit to try out :-) worth looking into!

PooWillyBumBum · 01/10/2019 15:38

The Nappy Lady will recommend the right kit for you if you fill out their advice questionnaire: www.thenappylady.co.uk/advice-questionnaire.html

I did it and it was really helpful. I ended up buying most secondhand in the end but the PDF she sent was very comprehensive and I'm sure I'll use them at some point.

Celebelly · 01/10/2019 15:42

There are no flushable inserts (inserts are the things that go inside pocket nappies). There are liners that claim to be flushable but I wouldn't. Just bin them.

TotsBots do a trial pack that is often half price. It's got a night nappy, wrap, all in one, and peenut pads.

If you're breastfeeding, you won't need liners for a while as milk poop is water soluble and just dissolves in washing machine and is drained away. I only started using liners when DD started on solids.

Celebelly · 01/10/2019 15:43

I'm actually not sure if formula poop is the same so maybe someone else knows. I'd think so?

I just bought three Littles and Bloomz nappies and boosters from Amazon - it seemed easier than anything else and didn't break the bank. Luckily, we get on really well with them, so we've got about 20 now.

paperplant · 01/10/2019 16:26

Definitely check out the nappy lady website, and you could join facebook groups for cloth/reusable nappies for advice and/or buying used nappies. There are lots of different types and it's good to try a few to see what you (and any other people changing nappies) get on with, and what fits your baby!

Also check out cleanclothnappies.com/washing-guidelines/ on how to wash nappies (Clean cloth nappies are also a FB group )

I’ve got the EasyFit by TotsBots. Baby isn’t here yet, being induced tomorrow.
I’ve been a nanny for 24 years and I have used lots of different ones. I really like these, they aren’t too bulky and even DH can put them on

Amberfyw · 01/10/2019 21:23

If you don't mind second-hand reusables, then do try your local council. We only found out about the free scheme after we'd bought the Mio Bambino Miosolo starter pack. Luckily, we do love the Miosolos! Definitely recommend.

Also, I would highly, highly recommend the Cheeky Wipes reusable wipes starter pack - so easy to use. And they are great for wiping messy face and hands when weaning! Smile

MsMustDoBetter · 01/10/2019 21:27

I loved using cloth.

Either consult the nappy lady or head straight to Little Lambs.

Ah no it's a bit more firmer.

I'm following this thread, didn't use cloth nappies with DS but would love to this time and no idea where to start.

Check out Lilly's nappies and Clothbaba (they're opening this week I ordered in the prelaunch) they're all a fab price so great to build up a few extras to see what you like. We've also got done all in ones and just need to order some all in twos. Its our second baby but used disposable with out first, going to get a couple of each type and see what we like

RachealJC · 02/10/2019 09:11

Definitely try different brands, don't buy in bulk before finding a nappy which works best for your baby. Tots bots trial kit is very good because it gives you a few different types to try. Pocket nappies are quite good, you pop an insert inside the pocket and then a liner in the nappy. Wraps are very good because they can be used more than once if not soiled. Littles and bloomz on Amazon do some pretty cheap pocket nappies which come with inserts but you can also buy inserts separately for a good price. www.fillyourpants.co.uk is a really good website, they have a whole range of nappies on there and with each product they recommend what you would need. It kind of seems daunting at first because there are different types of nappy but once you've found what's right for you it's really easy.

aliensprig · 02/10/2019 09:17

I also recommend Fill your Pants, fab website with a great selection!

Another good one to look at is TJ's Cloth Nappies, if you want to support a small business: www.tjsclothnappies.co.uk/

Bungeoura · 02/10/2019 16:27

Another recommendation for Fill Your Pants here! I haven't done their trial myself, but know they offer one. Looks like it's a 30 day nappy trial of various brand new nappies for £100 deposit and £10 P&P www.fill-your-pants.com/nappy-trial-packs/nappy-trial.html

Ive been on there as I'm curious and I found it really helpful and reasonable. I don't want to hjack thread but the things that go in nappies is so confusing.. Flushables, Muslins ect Confused

cottontailss · 02/10/2019 20:04

Yeah I'm confused about liners etc

How does one build a nappy so to speak?

Celebelly · 02/10/2019 20:48

There are different kinds of nappies.

There are all in ones which have an absorbent core attached to the nappy that you can't remove. You don't need any extra inserts for these, but you can add them to boost absorbency.

There are pocket nappies, where you have to stuff inserts in.

There are wrap systems, where you either have a cloth under-nappy that you put a wrap over the top of, or where you popper pads inside the wrap. You don't have to wash the wrap every time so you need a lot less wraps than you need the other parts.

Then there are foldables like terry towels etc.

All in ones are the most like disposables but tend to be more expensive as a result.

Celebelly · 02/10/2019 20:49

Oh and liners sit on the top of the nappy to catch poo. You can just dispose of them after use.

cottontailss · 02/10/2019 20:53

Thanks Celeb 🙂
