Beansprouts dangerous in pregnancy?

Bpaem · 30/09/2019 17:43

Hello I'm 5 weeks pregnant and I just ate a stir fry made with pre prepared veg that was use by Saturday and it's Monday today. Just realised that bean sprouts could carry listeria and I'm now terrified that even though I cooked it the beansprouts could make me ill as they were past the use by date. There wasn't too many in the stir fry. Do u think I'm just being paranoid or should I maybe get checked out? Really appreciate any advice

Paranoid. Don't worry

PotteringAlong · 30/09/2019 17:45

You’re being paranoid. Look at the nhs list for what you can and cannot eat. Bean sprouts are not on it. You will be fine .

Think about it, logically. When was the last time you heard that someone got ill off a beansprout?

Mrsducky88 · 30/09/2019 17:47

Never heard that before and should’ve fine seeing as it’s cooked. I’ve just put loads of beansprouts in my vege laksa so let’s hope it’s ok 🤷🏼‍♀️

Alpacathebag · 30/09/2019 17:47

If you feel ill get checked out, but otherwise it would be a waste of time. You cooked them so you’re probably fine.

pooopypants · 30/09/2019 17:47

Bean sprouts? Really?

You're over thinking it

ShirleyPhallus · 30/09/2019 17:48

Ouch, few sniffy replies here that go against the official advice actually!

You can’t eat bean sprouts when raw but they’re absolutely fine cooked

Don’t worry!

Thenotes · 30/09/2019 17:49

Bean sprouts have occasioanly been "guilty" in listeria cases but it's nothing to do with their age but the hygiene in the production. They wont develop listeria because they're past their date.

Thenotes · 30/09/2019 17:50

And yes, cooked theyre fine even if they are contaminated

Bpaem · 30/09/2019 17:51

Thanks everyone, I think deep down I know that it's irrational but sometimes just need others to help me see sense. I didn't think anything of it while I was eating but remembered after something about bean sprouts and pregnancy and of course decided to Google it....bad idea! Thanks again though, I feel calmer already :)

They are fine as you have cooked them

Her0utdoors · 30/09/2019 17:54

There was a couple of cases of illness from uncooked ran sprouts during one of my pregnancies, can't remember which and I did avoid them. I haven't heard anything recently though, stick to the NHS advice and you should be fine.

If you cooked them they’re fine

gamerchick · 30/09/2019 18:56

Does anyone actually eat raw beansprouts? It's not a veg I would just think to snack on.

Teddybear45 · 30/09/2019 19:08

Yes people do. They are really good during pregnancy - but it’s usually safer to sprout your own
