Does it get better after week 9?

I was reading one of the "week by week" guides to pregnancy, which said that week 9 is basically the peak when it comes to sickness, tiredness etc - and that it starts to get better from here on in.

Does anyone know if that's true? I'm 9 weeks pregnant and am really struggling with work this week - I have a load of deadlines and honestly have no idea how I'm going to meet them!

Oh you poor thing! I read that it got a lot better from week 14, I think, and it really did.

They say 3 months dreary, 3 months cheery, 3 months weary. So it changes around the 12-week mark. I don’t know what happens at week 14 but I remember feeling markedly better.

The first 3 months are exhausting and you really do feel awful. Any chance of taking a sick day?

I was sick from 6 to 16 weeks in my first pregnancy and hardly at all in my second. I have never heard that things get easier at week 9.

I feel your pain, op. I’m 9wks too and I’ve never had sickness like this before with my other pregnancies.

Haha - I like that!

I read on this site that the HCG hormone is at its peak in week 9:

Over the past few weeks, the levels of human chorionic gonadotropin, have been doubling in your body every two or three days.

The NHS says when you're 9 weeks pregnant, the hormone is at its peak. This could make you feel unwell, but while this is going on, this hormone is keeping your baby in place in the lining of your womb.

I'm certainly feeling it!

@tacosplease I've not been well at all and I'm now 12 weeks. So 6 weeks of constant sickness. My doctor says it's hyperemesis although I'm only sick 2/3 times a day with the off day I'm just severely nauseous. It's so annoying because it often comes from nowhere. I hope you're feeling better soon and meet your deadlines. Xx

I'm 26 weeks and it's just started to get better now it did with my 5th pregnancy at this stage aswell they are both girls , but when I was carrying my boys it got better around 12-14 weeks, I hope things settle for you it's the most awful bit of being pregnant 🤰 xx

Peony99 · 30/09/2019 17:37

I wasn't sick (thankfully) but was very, very tiered.

It did start to get better at around 9/10 weeks, and by about 13 I was almost back to normal.

Now 26 weeks and knackered again, though.

Not in my case I'm afraid. 8 weeks was when HG hit in my first pregnancy and lasted until the third trimester. This time I had morning sickness from 6-16 weeks and felt pretty crappy until that eased (although nowhere near as bad as I'd felt with HG!). Lots of rest, plenty of fluids and whatever you can stomach food-wise is my best advice.

ShirleyPhallus · 30/09/2019 17:46

Weeks 4-10 were the worst for me, absolutely exhausted in the early days then just sickly and headachy thereafter

I’m in second trimester now and Christ I feel so much better

Not long to go OP, good luck! Hope you feel better!

Nope. At 38 weeks with your 3rd baby when you’re looking after 2 other children you’ll be knackered.

Week 9 of your first pregnancy isn’t going to come close.

I suspect the difference is that, by that point, you’re used to being knackered so you can power through more. From now on in your tolerance just gets higher.

Little unfair that. I mean, you may as well say “8 children in, sole carer, training for a marathon - now that’s exhausting! 3rd baby in doesn’t even come close!”
