What to put in nursery??

As per title, we obviously have a cot and Moses basket for our bedroom until she's in a cot, but the nursery has built in wardrobes so we won't need a wardrobe. I've heard so many people say they didn't use a changing table.. so I'm kind of stuck?! A nursing chair maybe?! First time mum if you can't already tell!!

Ours literally has a cot in it and a chest of drawers.

Would like a chair for next baby but mainly for me to be comfortable wouldn't use to feed. More when they learning to go to bed in their own room

italianfiat · 29/09/2019 14:51

Don't waste your money on a nursing chair in babies room. If they are with you at night you just lift and feed on your bed and by day you would feed downstairs. By the time baby goes in their own room they often don't need a night feed, but even if they do you can just take them through to your room. Nursing chair = biggest waste of money over all the baby products I bought.

welshweasel · 29/09/2019 14:52

Ours has a cot, chest of drawers and a daybed that we use for guests or if one of us has to sleep in with baby for whatever reason. Never used a changing table. Fed either in bed or on sofa.

Definitely a chair! I didnt breastfeed long but we rock my little boy to sleep in a rocking chair every night. Plus when you're getting up at 3am it's nice to have somewhere to sit to cuddle. I had a kallax unit that I had a changing mat on top of but to be honest we barely used it. Otherwise we painted some ikea spice rack that make nice book shelves and put a child sized chair in the corner, and put up some larger shelves for bits and Bob's, and the rest is toys.

I would start minimal because the stuff you accumulate is crazy!

MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 29/09/2019 14:58

I had a nursing chair and it was the best money I spent. I didnt breastfeed in bed because i was always scared i would fall asleep so at night would go to DDs room, change her on her changing table (godsend for me because I couldn't bend down for weeks after labour) and then sit on the chair to feed. Still use it now if shes unsettled and needs cuddles at night and she's almost 2
I think its hard to know what you need because everyone does things so differently.

Cot, chest of drawers and (most important) a very, very comfy chair. Also a variety of lighting options.

Chefwifelife · 29/09/2019 15:01

We got a poang chair from ikea which we love even though it’s not used for feeding a baby now. We definitely didn’t need a changing table.

Andersonx3 · 29/09/2019 15:16

Wow thanks everyone. Mixed opinions on a chair but a changing table seems to be a no for most! I think I'll just get a small set of drawers and potentially a chair and leave it at that! I plan to BF but think I'll probably do it in the nursery so my DH can sleep for work whilst I'm on mat leave so may find a chair helpful.

Our sons room has his bed, chest of drawers and built in wardrobe. Other than that it's just toys. Nothing else necessary. I never had a rocking chair due to space. But it would have been appreciated especially when he actually moved to his own room 😊

DamnaThatOnesTaken · 29/09/2019 15:44

Re changing table I changed him on our bed at night. I had a changing mat for downstairs which I slid under the couch 😊. You could have a mat for the bed if you're worried about spills.

mistermagpie · 29/09/2019 16:12

We didn't have a nursery as such, I mean, I just stuck a cot in the box room, DS1 is four and that room has still never been decorated (DS2 is in there now).

Our room is a bit small but if you can fit a chair in then definitely do. It's fine when they are babies in your room but when they get older it's really handy to have somewhere to sit if you are helping them get dressed, or to read a story before bed, or just sit yourself if they are the kind of child that needs company to fall asleep. In my opinion a changing table is a waste of time but a chair is useful for years.

Bol87 · 29/09/2019 19:05

We are the exception it seems, I loved our changing table! We bought a chest of drawers that converts to a normal top so didn’t waste any money as now it’s just a regular chest of drawers!

The changing table was just at a nice height for me with a sore back post pregnancy. Our bed was a bit low. I used it to change my daughter in the morning and into her ‘day clothes’ (ie, a different sleepsuit). Then would use it again after bath for drying, a little massage, a little naked kick around for her & then dressed for night time 😊

I did have a second mat in the living room for daytime changes, I didn’t lug her back upstairs admittedly!

NanooCov · 29/09/2019 19:13

We had a changing thing that sat on the top of the cot. I liked it as it saved my back though stopped using it once they babies were rolling.

I bought the Ikea Poang (think that's what it's called) rocking chair for my second and it is great. Wish I had it with the first. Didn't bother with footstool. They do it in loads of great colours. Ours is teal.

I had visions of a wonderfully decorated and thought-out nursery, but DC1 ended up in our spare room once he moved out of our bedroom. It had his cot in it, and a chest of drawers. It's a long time ago now, but I am pretty sure we didn't actually need anything much. The things we really, really, really used were a cheap changing mat from Mothercare (which we used on the dining table), the baby bath (which we used in the kitchen - we did sometimes bath them in the kitchen sink), a bouncy chair thing, and that was it. Both DC slept in the carry cot when they were tiny (we had an old-fashioned Silver Cross pram). Those things were invaluable, though. A bit later, we also used a baby bath seat every day, as I needed to be able to sit baby DC2 in it safely (she could sit up then, obviously) while DC1 was a small toddler, so I could bath them together. We also had two Tripp Trapps, which were invaluable.

TBH, everything was a bit of a muddle when they were little. But you need less than you think!

Pipanchew2 · 29/09/2019 19:22

Most useful thing we had was a spare bed. When DD1 was little/ sick I slept in there so DH could sleep. Now that DD is 3 we use it for guests and for sitting on whilst we endlessly wait for her to go to sleep!

33goingon64 · 29/09/2019 19:36

I agree on the chair - didn't buy a special one, used the Ikea poang we already had. I decided I was going to grit my teeth and get up to feed in a chair at night so as not to fall asleep. Worked for me. Start with drawers and Moses basket. Sleeping bag and muslins. It's all you need for first weeks.

MerryDeath · 29/09/2019 20:39

agree on the spare bed too actually. and yes you don't need a special 'nursing' chair or whatever. just comfy! for ds2 I'm just going to move one of our armchairs upstairs (other comfy chair still lives with ds1 who also requires a lot of cuddles.

BringMeThatHorizon · 29/09/2019 20:45

I have a chest of drawers with a changing unit on top that can come off when they grow out of it. I couldn't have dealt without it. Literally every change at home is done on there. We're in a flat so no stairs to climb, but even still changing on the floor is a killer for your back. And I have a rocking chair that I used as a nursing chair that again I couldn't live without it. Hated feeding in bed as it was too uncomfortable and I hated having to pile pillows in and out every couple of hours. Plus my DS has only just started dropping night feeds at 11 months so I get so much use out of it. It's a big part of our bedtime routine as well. It seems I'm the odd one out with both of these things though!

Sunshinegirl82 · 29/09/2019 20:47

We have a cotbed, chest of drawers (with a changing mat on top, it's an Ikea Hemnes not a special one), tall Kallax (for storing extra nappies, wipes etc) and a nursing chair.

Baby still in with us for now so nursery gets limited use! If bf I'd say don't rush moving them into their own room unless there is a reason to. I moved DS1 at 6 months and regretted it as he was still feeding at night. Keeping DS2 in with us until he drops the night feeds!
