Cradle-cap...

My 3 month old daughter has had cradle cap for the past couple of months. My doctor advised us to use olive oil on it but it still doesn't seem to be shifting and if anything is getting a bit worse! How long does it usually last and can any one recommend a good treatment??

What are you doing with the olive oil?

I found it worked, but you have to help it along a bit. Once the oil has softened the cradle cap, you can loosen it gently with a comb and it will brush out.

Dentinox shampoo works as well, but I preferred the olive oil.

Rubbing it in and then brushing her hair regularly -maybe I'm just being impatient!! haven't picked any off that isn't loose in case it scars. How long did it take for yours to clear up??

Once the Olive oil has softened it use was the oil off with a gentle shampoo and a cotton ball to gently help brush away the loose flakes.

But try not to worry too much or to do it too often as you dont want to damage the scalp just remove the build up of oily flakes.

Good luck

my mum ( a mw of 30 yrs now) told me when ds1 was born (4yrs ago) to 'leave it alone, it'll go by itself'

a crap piece of advice that.

they still have it now (4, 3 and 18m.)

im using dentinox shampoo now and then, didnt realise you had to brush too... can be a bit dim at times.

still, it sounds like over zealous treatment would be worse than ignoring, so that something anyway...

Thanks - I'll just carry on with the olive oil and try to forget about it - she doesn't even know it's there, bless her xx

no, its never bothered any of the ds's... and now they have hair you cant see it either.

just occurs to me, that if its not gone by now, it may need a little gentle encouragement or it'll be there when they are adults.

Hi there
We did the same as Wigwambam but DD's got a lot worse before clearing up in a short space of time! It started just on her forehead and the front of her scalp but then ended up going round her eyes! Looked a little strange but people usually knew what it was LOL

We used Olive oil the whole time and, as you are doing, gently rubbed off the loose bits, thought we were flogging a dead horse then it cleared up over a couple of days!

We used it after a bath, as skin dries out more after being in water, left it over night to soak in etc and gently rubbed her head in the morning, then repeated at bath time in the evening! (At that point we were bathing every night to get into routine so it fitted quite well with that)
