Hi all. If I am rhesus negative and my partner is rhesus positive will I have the anti d injections in my first pregnancy or just future pregnancies? Thank you

If you are rhesus neg then you will be given anti d in all pregnancies and baby will be tested after birth to see if you need it then as well. My dh was not tested

Cannyhandleit · 29/09/2019 09:11

Yes you will have to have anti d, even if your dp was resuscitated negative they would give it to you!!

Cannyhandleit · 29/09/2019 09:12

Resuscitated 😂

You’ll be fine. You will get an injection during the pregnancy and then one after if the baby is a positive blood group.

I was reading an old thread about this ages ago and not many people realised it contained blood products. So I thought I’d mention it in case it’s of use to you.

It depends if your area is doing antenatal testing yet.

Some areas check the rh status of the baby through maternal blood. If baby predicted positive then you would be offered the anti d in pregnancy and after and also if you experience bleeding or a fall. If baby predicted negative then you don't get offered it and at birth they send a cord blood sample to double check. If baby comes out positive at that point then you'd be offered it.

If your area doesn't do antenatal testing then the norm is to offer the injection in pregnancy plus as above for bleeding etc (Any possible times you could develop antibodies) and then send a cord blood sample at birth and give a further dose if baby positive but not if negative. It doesn't matter about your partner. If he is positive then it doesn't necessarily mean your kids will be, as he may still carry a negative gene and if he is negative then although it is most likely that the baby will be negative there is a slight, slight change of them being positive due to mutations.

This is my first pregnancy and I had the injection this week.

I actually asked the midwife who gave the injection why they don’t just check partners medical records because that could rule out the need for me having the injection. Apparently they used to do this but there were lots of problems where people would say person A was the father when really it was person B!

Teddybear45 · 29/09/2019 10:23

My area would check the baby’s RH status if you are negative and tailor their advice from there. However if you already have antibodies they don’t tend to do anything except watch and wait - you might get sent for extra scans.

I’m A negative and my midwife took some blood a few weeks ago to find out if baby was positive or negative. He came back positive so I had my injection on Friday

supadupapupascupa · 29/09/2019 10:40

When I had my first I was not given the injection until after my first child was born and tested. Then the next pregnancy it was a few injections throughout pregnancy

Thank you everybody for your responses.

I am rheses neg too, I didn't get any anti d, was told I would only get it if I had a bleed. Which I didn't have. X

What's the significance of this @Marmite27? I've also recently discovered that I'm rhesus negative and am a bit gutted as I'm not looking forward to more injections!

Marmite27 · 29/09/2019 17:43

Some people are opposed to receiving blood products, being a Jehovah’s witness are probably the most well known but there were other reasons I can’t remember now!

My DD is R- and my DGS is R+

She is extremely needle phobic so didn't have anti D after he was born (it was discovered during labour).

She was offered a blood test at 16 weeks with her current pregnancy, to check this babies blood group (obviously, she hasn't been able to take this up).

I don't know if this blood test is offered in all areas though.

Good luck! Flowers
