Hey all. So I'm 18 weeks and and I have been feeling baby now and then for the last few weeks. This is my first pregnancy.
I notice that I will feel her a lot one day and then the following day is basically nothing at all. And the day after it's a lot!
Does anyone else have on and off movements too?? it was very very strong last night and constant for a couple hours. And today it's literally nothing ??

From what I remember, they aren't concerned about movement until around 24 weeks. But if you are worried, call triage - I called twice because I was concerned about movement and they got me in for a scan and check. They would rather you be in 100 times and everything be fine.

Frizzy1986 · 28/09/2019 20:14

If you have any concerns at all about movement then please contact your midwife team to talk to them about it.
I expect at this early stage they will not be concerned as you arent expected to spot/monitor patterns until around 28 weeks. At 18 weeks a lot of people won't have even felt movement as baby is so small and even if you have, it can easily move to an area where you would not feel it.
I didn't feel my first until around 22 weeks and my second I got flutters at 16 weeks and more movement by 18 weeks but it was still very sporadic.
But always speak to a midwife when it comes to feeling movement as they are the experts.

I was the same during my pregnancy with DS. Midwife said it wasn't unusual and they wouldn't be worried if I didn't feel baby move every day and notice a pattern until 24weeks.

Thank you all. I presume it's the position she is in has changed and it's just not possible to feel because she's small at the moment. it's been like this on and off for a couple weeks now. also I did have a scan two weeks ago and she was fine. I just found it bizarre because last night it was very strong and actually gave me seasickness because it's was very swirly !! Il see how it goes tomorrow which I'm sure she will pipe up :) and if not then il call on Monday. xx

Baby is quite small so will be just moving about. You can feel her when she's in certain positions and not others, so I really wouldn't worry.

Jent13c · 29/09/2019 09:01

I had this but felt movement really early as 2nd baby then it seemed to be very sporadic. Midwife wasnt concerned and she checked heart beat at appointment and thought I might have an anterior placenta causing the sporadic movement. This was discovered at 20 week scan and now at 23 weeks I feel movement all the time but can tell when he is tucked behind the placenta as it's a much different movement. If you are the same focus on really low down and your sides because early on you may only feel the baby there

barnyb · 29/09/2019 10:05

@Jent13c that's really interesting because everything you just said is me!
So right ! I can sometimes feel her so very low down near my pubic bone. And sometimes very far on my right and same on left. The other night she was so strong and I could feel everything. It was as if she was just right under my skin and it was making me feel so seasick! She must have moved into a fully position that night 😄
Thanks all for your responses xxxx

@barnyb I didn't feel anything until 21 weeks & it was spontaneous. I got a lot at night, mainly low down but not often until a I was about 22 weeks.

Every scan/mw app where they've listened they've commented on how active she is but I couldn't always feel it. The sonographer at 20 weeks told me to lie down with my hands on my tummy and really concentrate.

I recently got seen at the hospital to check movement, thought I'd pass on what they told me if you're ever worried.
Have a cold sugary drink & lie on your left side (I had already done this) if you can count 10 movements in 2 hours they're happy with that.
It doesn't matter the strength of the movement, only the frequency. They count a flutter the same as a kick.

That's the first time I've ever been given a number. Good to know for when you're further on & have to tune into the movement more.

barnyb · 29/09/2019 17:39

@Everafter1 thank you for your response that's great advice ! I have slightly felt some funny rumbles down low today. But it is very light and nothing like I was having. However I agree with the advice of baby may have been in a different position and I just felt it stronger then because she may have been really good position.
I don't ever have any fizzy or sweet drinks in the house so I am going to get a few cans to shove in the fridge for this kind of thing and see if that makes any difference! Thank you 😊

It's reassuring when you feel it Smile
Yeah, they have so much room to move around earlier on, flipping around all the time. It's great you've felt the movements from so early!

Mine's did a 180° at the 20 week scan when she was about to get measured & I didn't feel a thing 😂
Since then I've been getting kicked like mad pretty much constantly (with the exception of last weekend). They thought her limbs had been facing inwards.
At the start of the weekend I had a very sore "kick" like she was pushing round my tummy, then not much. Had it again in the hospital & back to the constant kicks 😂 must've been moving back.

Yeah, good idea. Have some at the ready just for peace of mind! & any time you're unsure, call your mw even just for reassurance Smile

barnyb · 29/09/2019 21:02

@Everafter1 actually yes! Iv had some huge turns and movement at scans and haven't felt a thing! So that's also something to bare in mind isn't it! These little babies do worry you don't they ! Such naughtiness already 🤩
also this is all brand new to me so I just have no idea what to expect and what is the norm or not the norm!? 🤷🏻‍♀️
I think I just need to take it day just day and see what unfolds 😊 thank you!

@barnyb wondered where you had got to lol glad you're OK and yes I am thanks 😊

I wouldn't worry just yet hun, I know it's easier said than done when it's your first baby! My little one would be on the go all day then the next I wouldn't feel anything at that stage, my midwife said he was just taking a break and sleeping to regain all the energy he used the day before, she'd call it his chill day! He did this up until about 28 weeks and then he was always on the go. But if you ever are concerned phone the triage, they'd rather check everything out than have you stressing out x
