Well where do I start, I’m hoping some of you lovely ladies will have some advice for me as I’m Petrified....... I’m already a mother of 5 all born viginally, 3 were prem one was very premature ( 3 months early) and 2 full term my last pregnancy was so perfect all the way had no bleeds and she came at 39 weeks, however she is only 9 months old ( I don’t plan on it but it’s happened) anyway I’m now currently 21 weeks, at 9 weeks I went to hospital with a severe bleed but was told everything was all ok then I went for my 12 week scan and was told all was fine apart from my placenta was marginally near the cervix then a few weeks ago I was rushed in with another severe bleed but they did a speculum this time then I was admitted because they wasn’t sure if my waters had gone and I had PROM I was kept on the delivery suit all night and thankfully nothing happened, the next day I went for urgent scan to check fluid around baby which thankfully was all normal so I was sent home then I went for my 20 week scan and was told again the fluid was all normal but he could see an area of bleeding and just said I had a low lying placenta but not to worry as most of the time they move then I’ve been to my consultant appointment this morning and been told yes they don’t think it was my waters but I’ve got a major low lying placenta and he doesn’t seem to think it will move he has really scared me actually going on about bleeding out etc he said if I’m bleeding I need to come back to which I said well I haven’t actually stopped bleeding he then said only if it’s fresh blood how am I going to know what’s fresh or not he told me that they actually picked this up on my 12 weeks scan which I wasn’t told about but when I’ve looked in my notes at my 20 scan it just says I have a low lying placenta position prostirior which I haven’t got a clue what that means and I’m pretty sure they told me it was only just covering my cervix but the consultant said it’s not I’m so confused as to what is going to happen to me and my baby I feel like I’ve been told one thing by the sonographer and another by the doc. I’m still bleeding but it’s more like spotting at the min. I’d really appreciate if anyone has got any advice or had a similar experience they could possibly share with me. Thank you 🙏🏻

Hi!

In our trust those with a low lying placenta tend to be monitered really closely and offered a c-section.

I think somewhere in your post you asked how you would know whats fresh blood and whats not. Fresh blood looks bright red, old blood tends to be brown.

It sounds like from what you've described your low lying placenta was known about since the 12 week scan.

There is an increased risk in bleeding if youre not monitered and something happens. But its really nothing to worry about, you'll probably be monitered a bit more than usual and have a c-section. Just keep an eye on things

Thank you for posting, yes they said they saw it in the 12 week scan but failed to tell me and I’ve checked my green notes and can’t find anything, the 20 weeks one just says position is posterior and that the placenta is low lying but everything else is normal, what would be the chances of it moving out of the way do you think? I have another scan at 28 weeks. Thanks x

Your pregnancy sounds exactly like my 4th pregnancy, my little boy was born 3 months early because I had a low lying placenta every night for 4 weeks my waters would go, after him I had a brilliant pregnancy with my daughter and now 26 weeks with my 6th baby, I hope all goes well for you xxx

Posterior means 'at the back'. So I assume your placenta is low and at the back.

I know its nice to be told everything and telling you at the 12 week scan might have given you more time to prepare, but medically it wouldnt have made any difference. I think you said you knew it was marginally covering your cervix from week 12, so from that you can assume its low lying. Do you think knowing earlier would have made you a bit more anxious for longer?

Im not going to say it will move, or it wont move. Its impossible to know for sure. What id concentrate on is knowing that theres a plan in place for the worst case scenario. If you've got that sorted, then everything else is a piece of cake 🙂 . Try to concentrate on this rather than dwelling on all the terrible things that can happen.

My friend had a low lying placenta though. She had a c-section at 35 weeks. Everything turned out fine!
