Recurrent thrush in pregnancy (Gyno-Daktarin cream)

Hi,

I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant and I've had recurrent thrush for about 5 weeks now. I've had 2 swab tests done within this period and both came back showing thrush (not bacterial vaginosis). The first 3 treatments (in the space of 5 weeks) my GP has given me the canestan pessary with the cream.

I still feel internal itchiness, called the GP and they said there was no point in doing another swab test as they've already done it twice and same results have come back. So this time, I've been prescribed a cream called Gyno-Daktarin.

My GP said it was the "next step". I'm not entirely sure what he meant by that, he seemed to be in a rush and hung up on me fairly quickly. Maybe that it's stronger? Just wondering if anyone else has used this cream during pregnancy?

I went to see an out of hours GP a couple of weeks ago, and she said some women may just have to live with it during pregnancy. But my midwife said the GP shouldn't have said that. Has anyone just "lived with it" during pregnancy and not bothered to take treatment after a certain amount of time? Does it cause any harm to the baby if you just put up with it?

I think you're supposed to get a course of treatment to take over a few days rather than a dose then a big gap and then another dose.

@dementedpixie I did mention that to my GP, but they said no :'(

Is it the capsule or the cream? The cream seems to come with an applicator to insert cream over a few days.

AR23 · 25/09/2019 16:37

@dementedpixie it's the cream

@ameliathomas84 and you used it during pregnancy? How's everything now?

Have you been tested for gestational diabetes?

If you cut out all sugar and all carbs except vegetables from above the ground, you'll stop ‘feeding it’ and it’ll die off. Apple cider vinegar (drink it, diluted in water!) Must be the sort ‘with the mother’ (it’ll be written on the bottle) will kill the rest off (NOTE -check it’s ok when pregnant!).

It was the thing that made me go low carb, then when I fell off the wagon I got it back again and again, since going low carb again I haven’t had it anymore. There’s a lot of info online about it, it’s not just me!

Any questions- ask away!

I've had reoccurring thrush this pregnancy now 33 weeks.
Move had creams and 7 day prescribed pessary course.

It keeps coming back tho 😒 dr just had to re prescribe me a pessary today.

ameliathomas84 · 25/09/2019 16:46

@AR23 on my last pessary tonight! 🤣🤣 I'm 28 weeks pregnant! This is my fifth time with thrush that's why they did it, she said sometimes women need if not pregnant it's 4 days in a row when pregnant it's 7 not bothered worth the cream it's just pessary, I'm hoping after tomorow I'm back to normal I'm miserable and so is my partner not had sex for over two weeks!!

SparkleJoy · 25/09/2019 16:59

I unfortunately lived with from about 22 weeks till birth in my pregnancy it was awful and all the midwife could do was give me pessary and cream. I feel your pain it was horrible! Hope you don't suffer all pregnancy.

AR23 · 25/09/2019 17:15

Hmm, thanks everyone. I've used canestan pessary and cream 3 times (not back to back 3 days in a row though). I was more concerned about this particular gyna daktarin cream and its use during pregnancy as I've not heard that commonly about it.

To be honest, my internal itchiness is "manageable"....not driving me crazy but definitely noticeable. I can resist the urge to scratch/itch down there, but I'd rather not have to LOL.

my midwife didn't seem too keen when I said "I know some women may just have to live it during pregnancy". I just don't want the GP to prescribe me something stronger (especially if it's risky) as I keep going back to see them and they may get fed up of me

@IncrediblySadToo I haven't been checked for gestational diabetes but I have that as part of my routine check at week 27, so I'm still 8 weeks away from that check up.

I did however faint at week 14, and had a nurse check my sugar levels (when they prick your finger and take some blood)....sugar levels were all fine then. I highly doubt I will have it, as I'm not overweight, under 35 and don't have family history...but I guess you never know with anything in pregnancy.

Hi OP,

I saw a consultant obs/gyne when I was about 23wks, he prescribed treatment which lasted 7 days (pessaries and cream) but told me in cases of recurrent thrush in pregnancy then the treatment is one pessarie once a week for the duration of pregnancy to 'keep the symptoms minimised' as opposed to aiming to totally eradicate it.

Unfortunately I went on to get recurrent thrush and I've found the GPs I've spoken to all have a different take on treatment. At the min my treatment is one high dose pessarie a week for 3 weeks, I'm fairly certain I'll be calling up for another prescription by week 4!
