I've just had a filling fall out. Half an exposed tooth.
Managed to get an appointment for the morning.
Reception said they won't extract just fill.
Just wondering what the difference is as still an anesthetic?
Want it removed as it's been re filled so many times and never stays

Im 27 weeks currently and at 21 weeks i had a wisdom tooth removed and 24 weeks had a filling.. the anesthetic is fine. They just wouldnt give me an amalgam filling while pregnant so i had a different sort but still had anesthetic and had it drilled etc the same x

Newyearsameoldshit · 23/09/2019 20:19

I had similar - they would not X-ray or use anaesthetic. They just filled it with instant setting stuff and said they'd see me once baby is born for X-ray and possible drilling and proper filling. Eek. Hate the dentist but at least it's free while you're pregnant!

So two completely opposite things happened then. Maybe it's down to the dentist themself.

I'm 22 weeks everything I've read days they prefer to do in 2nd trimester.
The dentist has changed.
The last one knew that I have huge anxieties around dental work.
So. When he said I needed a root canal I freaked and said no way just pull it and he did. I didn't care it was a few Months before my wedding and had a chance of being visible.. Luckily it wasn't.
This one is next to it further back.

I know if they said come back when baby here I'd avoid it.. Because of my fear.

It's annoying as I don't eat loads of crap but have naturally brittle teeth that things happen

My tooth had a huge hole that got infected and the antibiotics wasn't touching it, they would rather remove your tooth than keep feeding you antibiotics. I was in the worst pain ever, my uncle owns a private dental surgery an hour from me so he opened it up on a saturday just to take my tooth out, i was scheduled to have it removed at my dentist on the wednesday but no way could i of waited that long!!! My uncle was going to xray me because it was a wisdom and he said the dental xrays are so low radiation and pointed at your mouth it wouldn't affect baby and he had a digital xray machine which is even better but because it was a top wisdom not bottom he said he wouldn't bother xraying as they are easier to get out.. insist to your dentist tomorrow that you want it out, you have recurring problems with it anyway. I hope they take it out for you then you dont have to worry about it anymore.. x

Mum2b2020 · 23/09/2019 23:17

My filling fell out at 5 weeks and my dentist said the same as @Newyearsameoldshit
I was worried because it was a deep filling and I didnt want xray or anesthetic in my first trimester so he just cleaned the area and put a white filling over it.

Qwerty19 · 23/09/2019 23:35

This is half a tooth missing.. I'm gonna say just crack it out. No point filling it.
Had x Ray there recently so maybe they'll use that if needed.
Touch wood it's not painful right now just sensitive. But it's making me scared to drink.. I have no straws and need to drink before I die haha... OK so massive exaggeration but I'm so thirsty.. Gonna be brave and have a glass of warm. ( yuk) water. And gently try to brush that area before bed.

The dentist will do what they can to save the tooth, once they assess you they'll discuss what your options are.
You'll be fine to get an xray but it's completely your call whether you do or not & you should be given the choice before it's carried out.
They may avoid amalgam but applying an amalgam restoration is safer than removing it.
If your tooth is extracted you might just bleed more than normal & get loads of rest for the remainder of the day.
It must be really unpleasant for you. Hope after tomorrow it's much better.

Thank you.
Havent got too much to do after except pick dd up from. Childminder then she normally ha a 2 hr nap before school run so that'll be OK.
Then hopefully get keys to new house this arvo. But it's nothing strenuous :)
Im already panicking Im so scared of dentist. Even the smell.
And because it's sit and wait I have a 2 hour gap only before heaving to get dd.. Being late makes me very anxious so panicking about time already.. But telling myself by this arvo it should be sorted.

Yeah I get the waiting part! Anticipations often worse than the task itself.
I think part of the fear is because you can't see what's going on, it's like the unknown.

Mind over matter for a lot, you'll breeze the appointment, have this tooth sorted & can look forward to your new house Smile

I feel for you! I had a problems with mine when I was 38 weeks pregnant, I went to my usual surgery a week before Xmas and saw a different dentist to my usual and she said leave it until baby is here there's nothing we can do, 23rd Dec I went to the emergency dentist and they removed some infection and packed it with a temp filling and must have packed it too high as every time my teeth met it touched a nerve and the agony was a million times worse, I was actually in the maternity unit with query leaking of waters on Xmas eve and I was having a go on gas and air for the dental pain!

Xmas day 9am I was back at the emergency dentist and they gave me antibiotics and filed part of the filling down and admitted it had been done too big, couldn't eat and even cold air left me in agony, 29th Dec I was in work and rang my normal dentist crying saying I couldn't go through labour like this and they told me to go in, went in and he said you can wait for X-rays and a root canal/crown whatever you need or I can pull it now but you will have a gap, I let him pull it and the relief was amazing!

He offered to fill it the gap it left whilst I was still on an NHS exemption a few months later but I'm also really scared of the dentist so have just lived with the gap. Good luck!

Hi
Does anyone know if bleeding gums during pregnancy (9th month) are treated as emergency? I called my dental practice and they refused to see me but offer private appointment. Is that right? Can they refuse?

Toastedsesame · 12/05/2021 20:05

I'm guessing you've already seen the dentist but just wanted to add, the reason they've probably advised it'll be filled instead of extracted is because of current covid regulations in dentistry, the extraction will need to be planned for and time factored in afterwards if they need to use an aerosol procedure (called fallow time) this is because of the risk of covid spreading from the patient being treated to the dentist / nurses. They would probably fill temporarily and then book you to come back from an extraction at a later date if needed so they can factor in this extra time.

@Lusi2020 No bleeding gums is not an emergency, a genuine emergency is uncontrollable pain / swelling / bleeding. Get a routine check up but bleeding gums is common in pregnancy.

I need a tooth out.had antibiotics before we knew I was pregnant, went back to have it out and told him I’m now pregnant. He then said ok change of plan, will try and fill and pack, then come back after 12/14 weeks and I will take it out.
My dentist knows my history of miscarriage and said it is too traumatic to do this early on and he wouldn’t want to do anything that could maybe cause a miscarriage.
As he put it, we pulling something out of you jaw and it stays open. It’s a lot for the body to cope with while also growing a baby.
Booking mine back in for end of June.
