To double pram or not to double pram....

So I’m after some advice on what to do

I’m expecting my second DC, first will be 18m’s when this one arrives

My DS is walking and has been since 10 months- but we don’t yet walk any distance with him as he’s uncontrollable Grin and I’m not sure he could yet (he’s only 13m)

I’ve got a baby carrier and a single pushchair already but i don’t know whether to get a double pram. My DS is quite big (91st percentile) so I’m not sure how long he will fit/want to stay in a pram for

My concern about not getting a double is that he will get tired and I can’t really carry a baby in a carrier post 6m as it hurts my back...at which point DS will be 2 yr - does he need a pram at this point?

So do I....but baby in carrier and DS in pushchair (which can be used from newborn if needed)

Or bite the bullet and get a double pram for control as he will still be quite little etc?

I’m trying to get organised in case the one I want goes on sale/Black Friday etc...

Should have said...my reservation about the double is cost vs how much use we will get out of it as a double/even a single

DS went into a pushchair at 12m as the massive pram was just getting too big and heavy for me to push around

Depends on your lifestyle but if you do much walking, with your age gap, I definitely would. If you drive everywhere, you might be ok.

Get a double. We had a 19 month age gap and the double buggy was absolutely invaluable to us. We paid £80 for a second hand Phil and Teds on e bay.

I'd get one even just a cheaper one or second hand. My girl is 2 and 4 months and I do find myself using it less and less but if going any sort of distance I need it, have to coax her into it and sometimes even bribe or distract her!

They take forever to walk anywhere at that age so if even younger I wouldn't risk it. Some kids also just run away at that age and will not take ur hand and walk nice.

I had my niece at the wkend who is nearly 3 and my god was she so slow at walking even slower than my girl who is younger. I actually had a sore arm from basically pulling her!

I would get a double. We got a second hand bugaboo and it converts to a single for when the eldest is walking properly.

We have twins. And they’re both autistic so different scenario. But they’ve just turned 3 and while we don’t use the buggy that often there are times where it’s essential. Most of my friends with twins the same age still use buggies often, especially when going out alone / for long periods.

Something like a Nipper 360 would be ideal - didn’t get ours until they were older but I’m pretty sure you can get a newborn insert of some kind

If you get a top & bottom (Phil & Ted) style one you'll probably get more use out of it in the long run than a side by side, and can be used as a singer too. Much easier to get on busses, around shops etc and attract less attention (this coming from someone who had a triple buggy for ages. Talk about inviting strangers' comments).

You've loads of possibilities then:

Both in buggy
One in buggy one walking
One in buggy one in carrier
One in buggy, shopping in bottom section.

And later on

Both fighting to be in the bottom bit, tipping it over.

I got a Phil and Ted second hand for about £30.

Agree with pps - get a second hand one. Ours didn't get much use (2 years age gap) but the ability to just strap them both in and GET somewhere without them causing a fuss was a lifesaver when I needed it! If you buy second hand you can probably sell on for not much short of what you pay for it too.

mistermagpie · 23/09/2019 17:18

Get a double. There are 20 months between mine and the youngest hated being 'worn' so my idea of sling and a single never got off the ground. Buggy boards are good but can make a pram hard to push and there are loads and loads of times when I've needed them both strapped in, because you sort of end up with two toddlers at one point and they are tough to control when you're on your own. Plus for a while they might both need a nap when you're out.

We've had the baby jogger one, it will be coming out again when baby #3 arrives in December, even though my middle child will be 2.5 - he's a runner so I need to keep him in a pram sometimes!

mistermagpie · 23/09/2019 17:20

Top and bottom ones weren't for me, I do t like a lot of them and my boys wanted to sit next to each other.

Postmanbear · 23/09/2019 17:20

18 month age gap here, yes you need a double buggy. Still using ours daily. DS1 is 2.5 and will walk but is very slow and if he has refuses to walk it’s a nightmare!

mistermagpie · 23/09/2019 17:21

Meant to say, we've got the baby jogger one, I love it. My older son fitted in it until he was nearly 4! (He's very lazy)

Thanks for the advice everyone! Think I’ll try out a few and hopefully get it in the sale or second hand
