Baby monitors it really depends on what you feel you want it to do. Some are extremely hi tech, can play music/link to your phone, whether you want a camera one or just voice? I bought a Phillips one which was just voice as I thought I would get obsessed with watching him on a screen but very dependent on yourself.

We bought an angel mattress just for peace of mind. This worked fine in our next to me but once we transitioned to normal cot it became a nightmare as my DS is such a wriggler it would alarm in the middle of the night, send me into blind panic only to find he was down the bottom of the bed and by this point wide awake. So in my opinion great for the first few months but not needed much after that. Hope this helpsSmile

I didn't get one for ages because DS would sleep on us until we went up and then was in a beside me cot or co-sleeping. Got the BT 6000 in the end. It's brilliant, highly recommend it. I haven't had a mat myself but hear people have nothing but trouble with them.

We bought an Angelcare monitor with a breathing pad a couple of years ago when my daughter was born and have been very happy with it. The main criticisms you'll generally read are:

a) False alarms. We didn't have any problems with this until DD was big enough to move freely around the cot; and even then, it only happened when she lay right along the edge.

b) Not proven to reduce SIDS. OK, but it's also not proven to NOT reduce SIDS! If DD did stop breathing and we knew about it within seconds then we could at least try to do something to help - better than finding out when it's far too late.

Now pregnant again and it's twins this time, so we've bought a second Angelcare. From the recent reviews I've read, the newer wireless pads have a lot more issues, so we deliberately chose a slightly model with a wired pad.

We use Arlo which links to our phones via the web. We like it though appreciate some people don't like the idea of using a cloud-based one.

We also use the Owlet sock because I'm a paranoid horror of a first time parent! It really did allow me to sleep when we got home from the hospital, though. Otherwise I'd have barely dared to sleep for wanting to check he was still breathing! No false alarms except the first night when we didn't put the sock on properly.

We used the angel care monitor when he started to sleep on his front in the chicco next to me,.

When he moved into his cot i took the board from under the chico and put in on his slats, the mat continued to work well for several more months.

We live in a flat so don't need a sound monitor we got a camera off amazon, which was really good! We used that for almost three years but ds decided he didn't like the red lights so we had to switch it off! I miss it.

I have an Ezviz Mini O to monitor my dog whilst I'm at work/out of the house and at night. It connects to mine and my husbands phones and it has sound, motion sensor, night vision, is 1080p and we can speak through it. We're planning on getting the same to use for baby when she arrives as you can link to the same app and choose which camera to watch! I think they're about £50 on amazon and we love it! Here's a night vision screen shot of my pup napping so you can see general quality.

@Andersonx3 that's fab! I'd never seen these
ones in action but I've always liked that they connect to your phone. I want to put one in every room to see what my cats get up to.

Op, I had the tommee tippee video monitor with movement sensor mat. The sound/video is good (and still works 4 years later), but the 2 way talk back is terrifying and sounds like a demon, the sensor mat is great if your baby sleeps relatively still but we had a wriggler so had lots of alarms every night!

DC2 is due soon and I've got a sense-u monitor this time and will get a video monitor for when baby is in their own room.

My DD has this. Her DS sleeps over at my house a lot and the monitor comes with him. I wouldn't be without it.
He also has a movement mat in his cot, but she's going to take it out now he's much more mobile (he's 13 m) as he often ends up in the corner of his cot off the mat, and the alarm wakes him up when it goes off. But when he was smaller and didn't move around it was useful. He went into his own room at 3 months as he kept getting woken up by mum and dad!

@codenameduchess Mumsnet has ruined the quality of the image for some reason but they're clear as day - I can see what he's doing whilst I'm out and have motion sensors set up if I need to so when he has a wander my phone lets me know. It's a fab bit of kit, highly recommend!
